The Columbus Blue Jackets will take on the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday night. The Blue Jackets (7-5-0) are showing signs of life after a challenging start, while Calgary (3-9-2) remains stuck in a rut early in the season. Columbus is a slight favorite on the road as they look to continue moving in the right direction. Here, I will break down this matchup on the ice and give you my Blue Jackets vs Flames prediction.
Columbus enters this matchup with momentum on their side. They’re 7-5-0 overall and have won four of their last five games. They most recently lost a heartbreaker to the Islanders after leading late and will aim to bounce back from that here. They’ve scored an average of 3.25 goals per game, while conceding 3.00 goals per game.
Calgary has struggled mightily with just three wins in their first 14 games. The Flames are averaging only 2.14 goals per game and allowing 3.36 goals against per contest. Their offense has been particularly weak and they haven’t found consistent goaltending to make up for just how anemic they have been in the offensive zone.
Columbus' expected starter is Jet Greaves, who is 3-3-0 with a 2.68 GAA and a .916 save percentage. Calgary’s likely choice between the pipes is Dustin Wolf, who is 3-8-1 with a 3.39 GAA and a .884 save percentage. It's hard to tell how much of Wolf's struggles are his fault and how much of the blame belongs to the defenders in front of him. But it's all been bad so far for the Flames.
Kirill Marchenko leads the way for the Blue Jackets with 5 goals and 7 assists (12 points) in 12 games, showing strong two-way play. Zachary Werenski has 4 goals and 6 assists and plays big minutes for the Jackets as well. Nazem Kadri is the offensive leader of the Flames with 3 goals and 7 assists (10 points) in 14 games.
Player | Prop |
|---|---|
Kirill Marchenko (CBJ) | Over 0.5 Assists |
Jonathan Huberdeau (CGY) | Over 0.5 Goals |
Zachary Werenski (CBJ) | Over 0.5 Points |
Score Projection: Columbus Blue Jackets 4 – Calgary Flames 2
Win Probability: Columbus Blue Jackets 60% | Calgary Flames 40%
It is tough to justify backing the Calgary Flames given how they are playing right now. I'll go with Columbus to continue their recent hot streak, avoiding a second straight loss and handing Calgary yet another defeat.
