The Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning will meet Saturday evening in what promises to be a compelling NHL matchup between teams that are in contention to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Carolina enters this contest having just seen a winning streak end with a shootout loss on Friday, while Tampa Bay seeks to halt a recent slide on home ice. Here, I break down this matchup on the ice and give you my Hurricanes vs Lightning prediction.

The Hurricanes enter this game having just dropped a 4–3 decision in a shootout to the Florida Panthers after surrendering a 3–0 lead in the third period. Sebastian Aho scored twice while Brandon Bussi stopped 38 of 41 shots before the extra session. Carolina remains the top club in the Metropolitan Division, and they will try to resume their winning ways here.
Tampa Bay has struggled in December, with recent results including a 2–1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings and a 5–2 defeat at the hands of the Panthers. The Bolts have dropped three straight games and they have fallen out of the top four in the Atlantic Division standings.
Carolina’s goaltending situation is somewhat fluid, with Brandon Bussi coming off a strong individual stretch yet taking the loss Friday. The Hurricanes might turn to Pyotr Kochetkov, who recently posted a win with a 25-save performance, or Frederik Andersen. For the Lightning, Andrei Vasilevskiy has resumed action after an injury and posted reliable numbers this season. The goalie matchup could end up giving Tampa the upper hand at home in this matchup.
On offense, Carolina’s Sebastian Aho leads the way with 31 points, while Seth Jarvis has been the team’s top goal scorer with 19. For Tampa Bay, Nikita Kucherov leads the club with 42 points, though he is expected to miss this contest due to illness. Brandon Hagel is also listed as unavailable, which significantly diminishes Tampa’s attacking depth. Tampa defenseman Darren Raddysh has been a key contributor on the blue line with 24 points.
Player | Prop |
|---|---|
Nikita Kucherov | To Score a Goal |
Brayden Point | Over 0.5 Points |
Seth Jarvis | To Score a Goal |
Score Projection: Carolina 2 – Tampa Bay 3
Win Probability: Carolina 47%, Tampa Bay 53%
My best bet for this contest is for the under to cash in Tampa. Vasilevskiy gives the Bolts a reliable netminder to slow down the attack of the Canes, while the offensive struggles of the Lightning will continue as well. No matter who wins this game, I'll take the under.
