The Buffalo Sabres travel to Sunrise, Florida on Friday night to take on the Florida Panthers in an Atlantic Division matchup in the NHL at Amerant Bank Arena. Both teams come into this game with things to prove. Buffalo occupies one of the two Wild Card slots in the Eastern Conference, while the Panthers have some work to do in order to move into one of those spots themselves. Recent form
Buffalo enters this matchup with strong momentum after going 6-1-3 in their last ten games and most recently beating the Devils 2-1. That win was significant as it marked the return of goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen from a five-game absence and showed that the Sabres can grind out results even in tight defensive affairs. Florida comes in with a more rocky recent record, though they did get the better of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Now the Panthers will try to turn around and get another win here on the second game of a back-to-back.
Goaltending
Luukkonen’s return for Buffalo has stabilized things in the crease, giving them a reliable presence in goal as they chase valuable points on the road. For Florida, the goaltending situation has revolved around Sergei Bobrovsky, who had a solid showing in his return from the Olympic break on Thursday. Strong netminding could make a major difference in a close game like this, and Buffalo may hold a slight edge here based on recent form and confidence level between the pipes.
Key skaters
Buffalo’s offensive action is led by Tage Thompson, who has been a constant threat with over 30 goals on the season and a presence around the net that demands attention. Peyton Krebs continues to support the attack with timely contributions as well. Florida counters with leaders such as Sam Reinhart and Brad Marchand, both of whom have scored over 25 goals this campaign. The outcome of this game may hinge on which team’s top forwards can find space and finish scoring opportunities.
Score Projection: Buffalo Sabres 4 – Panthers 3 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Sabres 52%, Panthers 48% ATS PRO
The rest disadvantage for the Panthers should be what ultimately decides this game. Buffalo is the fresher team after Florida had to play just one night before this game. For that reason, I'll go with the Sabres to get an impressive road win over the two-time defending champs and for Buffalo to inch closer to locking up a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
