Seattle earned the NFC’s top seed by winning 14 games and beating San Francisco 13-3 late in final week of the regular season to secure home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. That victory was a product of Seattle’s stout defense and effective running game, with Zach Charbonnet’s touchdown and strong contributions from Kenneth Walker III leading the way. The Seahawks enter the Divisional round with confidence, buoyed by a 6-2 home record and a defense capable of limiting explosive offenses.
The 49ers arrive off a 23-19 road win against the Eagles in the Wild Card round, showcasing a ton of toughness in a close contest. Brock Purdy delivered key throws, and a creative trick play helped seal the victory. However, San Francisco suffered a significant blow with tight end George Kittle’s torn Achilles, which removes one of the team’s most dynamic offensive weapons from their playoff run. The 49ers also face travel and rest disadvantages here against a Seahawks team that earned a first-round bye.
Sam Darnold has managed Seattle’s offense effectively this season with 4,048 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. The question for Darnold is whether he can deliver in the playoffs after struggling in big games time and time again in the past. Avoiding interceptions will be huge for his hopes of leading his team to a win here.
Brock Purdy has led San Francisco’s offense with efficiency and poise, distributing the ball to playmakers and minimizing mistakes. Purdy threw two interceptions against the Eagles in the Wild Card round, but he also came through when the Niners needed him the most and the Niners will trust that he can do it again in this matchup.
Score Projection: Seahawks 24 – 49ers 20
Win Probability: Seahawks 74%, 49ers 26%
I lean toward the Seahawks winning this contest to advance to the NFC Championship Game. But I'm going to take the points with the San Francisco 49ers here. The Niners could very well win this game outright, and getting over a touchdown against Sam Darnold in a playoff game is an alluring proposition as far as I'm concerned.
