The Oklahoma City Thunder head to Boston on Wednesday night for a high-profile interconference clash with the Celtics, featuring two of the league’s most efficient teams on both ends of the floor. Oklahoma City enters with one of the NBA’s best records and a clear identity built around elite defense and MVP-level scoring from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Boston, meanwhile, continues to lean on its physical defense and perimeter shooting as it looks to defend its home court at TD Garden. With both teams firmly in playoff position, this Thunder vs Celtics matchup offers a great litmus test for both of these recent NBA champions.
Oklahoma City has separated itself as one of the most complete teams in the NBA, combining top-tier scoring with elite defensive efficiency. The Thunder are averaging 118 points per game while shooting 48% from the field, a sign of both pace and shot quality combining. Their ability to dictate tempo has been a major factor, especially against teams like Boston that typically prefer a more controlled style.
Boston counters with one of the league’s most disciplined defenses and a strong rebounding presence. The Celtics are allowing just 107 points per game and rank near the top of the NBA in defensive efficiency. However, consistency on offense has fluctuated at times, placing added pressure on their top scorers to keep pace with high-powered opponents like Oklahoma City.
Boston Celtics
Oklahoma City Thunder
Category | Thunder | Celtics |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 118.7 | 114.1 |
Points allowed per game | 107.5 | 107.0 |
Field Goal % | 48% | 46% |
Rebounds per game | 44.1 | 46.5 |
Assists per game | 25.6 | 24.4 |
Oklahoma City’s combination of scoring efficiency and defensive pressure gives it a clear edge in this matchup. The Thunder have consistently shown they can control games against top opponents, and their ability to generate points in transition could create problems for a Boston team that prefers a slower pace. Gilgeous-Alexander remains one of the most reliable closers in the league, which is a major factor in tight games. I expect OKC to win, cover the spread, and extend its winning streak to 13 games in a row.
