The Eastern Conference play-in round tips off Tuesday night with a high-stakes clash between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets, where the loser goes home and the winner advances. Charlotte enters with a slight edge in both record and home court advantage, while Miami comes in off an explosive offensive showing in its regular-season finale. With both teams featuring dynamic scorers and inconsistent defenses, we could be in for an entertaining Heat vs Hornets matchup to open postseason play in the NBA.

Key Storylines
- Charlotte hosts a win-or-go-home game after securing the ninth seed with a strong finish to the season. The Hornets exceeded expectations this year, but all of that will be for naught if they can't advance in the play-in tournament.
- Miami closed the year with a dominant 143-117 win and has shown elite scoring upside. The Heat averaged over 120 points per game this season, but they struggled on defense and need to be better on that end of the floor to win and advance here.
- The Hornets have been stronger defensively this season, which could be decisive in a playoff-style setting. But the Hornets also lack playoff experience, which could impact them negatively in this spot.
Key Players
Charlotte Hornets
- LaMelo Ball leads the offense with 7.1 assists per game and is the engine of Charlotte’s tempo and spacing.
- Brandon Miller averages 20.2 points per game and provides consistent scoring on the wing.
- Moussa Diabate controls the glass with 8.7 rebounds per game, helping Charlotte limit second chances. The duo of Diabate and Ryan Kalkbrenner will try to shut down Bam Adebayo and the rest of Miami's frontcourt.
Miami Heat
- Norman Powell leads the team with 21.7 points per game and has been a major scoring threat all season.
- Bam Adebayo anchors the interior with 10.0 rebounds per game and adds scoring and defense.
- Davion Mitchell contributes 6.5 assists per game, stabilizing the offense and pushing pace, while also serving as one of Miami's best perimeter defenders.

Heat vs Hornets Model Projection
- Score Projection: Miami Heat 110 - Charlotte Hornets 117
- Win Probability: Miami Heat 33%, Charlotte Hornets 67%
Charlotte enters this game with the more reliable defensive track record. That gap becomes more important in a single-elimination setting where possessions get slower and defensive stops carry extra weight. The Hornets also benefit from home court and a slightly stronger net rating, indicating more consistent performance on both ends of the floor. My best bet for this contest is for Charlotte to win and cover the spread at home to advance to the final round of the play-in tournament in the Eastern Conference.
