The opening game of this Western Conference first-round series between the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers is one where injuries will play a key role. The Lakers closed the regular season strong, yet injuries to key contributors have reshaped their postseason expectations. Meanwhile, the Rockets enter the postseason playing some of their best basketball of the year, powered by elite scoring and a deep rotation. Houston is a favorite going into this matchup, and you can find out if I think that is justified below with my Rockets vs Lakers Game 1 prediction.
Houston enters this game as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 9 of its last 10 games to close the regular season. Their offense has been efficient and balanced, and they have shown the ability to win both high-scoring and defensive games. Oddsmakers have taken notice, installing Houston as a road favorite given everything going on with the Lakers right now.
Los Angeles, on the other hand, finished 53-29 and secured home-court advantage in the first round, but roster concerns loom large. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are both sidelined, leaving a significant scoring gap. That puts pressure on LeBron James and supporting pieces to step up in a playoff setting against a deep opponent.
Los Angeles Lakers
Houston Rockets
Stat | Rockets | Lakers |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 115.2 | 116.3 |
Team Field Goal % | 48% | 50% |
Rebounds per game | 48.1 | 41.0 |
Assists per game | 25.4 | 25.9 |
The data points strongly toward Houston having the edge entering Game 1. Their recent form, scoring efficiency, and overall depth stand out, especially against a Lakers roster missing key offensive creators. While Los Angeles benefits from home court and still has veteran leadership, the lack of consistent secondary scoring options is difficult to overlook. I am going to lay the points with the Rockets here, as the Lakers need to prove they can function on this stage without two of their top three scorers.
