Cleveland Cavaliers vs New York Knicks Prediction: Game 1 a Golden Chance For New York

The Eastern Conference Finals open Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden with the New York Knicks set to host the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks have been resting since May 10 after rolling through Philadelphia in the second round of the playoffs, while the Cavaliers are coming off a physical seven-game battle with Detroit that ended Sunday night. New York enters Game 1 as the betting favorite behind its deep rotation, strong defense, and home-court advantage. Here, I break down whether or not that status is warranted as I make my Cavaliers vs Knicks Game 1 prediction.
New York enters the series with a major scheduling advantage. The Knicks have had more than a week to recover and prepare after dominating the 76ers in the second round. That extra rest matters against a Cleveland group that has played intense games every other night for nearly three weeks. Fatigue is a legitimate concern for the Cavaliers, especially in a difficult road environment.
Another major storyline surrounds the health of OG Anunoby. The Knicks forward has been dealing with a hamstring issue, but the extra days off appear to have improved his status entering Game 1. His ability to defend Donovan Mitchell without constant help could shape the entire series. New York has relied on Anunoby to guard elite perimeter scorers throughout the postseason.
The interior battle is also fascinating. Cleveland starts Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen together, giving the Cavaliers size and rim protection that few teams can match. The Knicks will answer with Karl-Anthony Towns, who has stretched defenses all postseason with his outside shooting and rebounding. Towns averaging close to a double-double while spacing the floor changes the geometry of New York’s offense. But if KAT can't avoid foul trouble against Cleveland's bigs, things could get interesting in this series quickly.
There is also pressure on Cleveland to avoid a slow start. The Cavaliers looked outstanding in Game 7 against Detroit, shooting better than 50% from the field, but road playoff basketball at Madison Square Garden is a different test. New York has fed off its home crowd energy all postseason and has posted several double-digit wins during its playoff run.
The rest advantage for the Knicks is the biggest key to this game as far as I'm concerned. We saw New York dominate Philadelphia in the first game of the second round after Philly played a Game 7 in Boston. I'm expecting a similar result for the Knicks at home against a Cavs team that had to play an extra week of basketball to make it to this stage. I'll lay the points with the Knicks in Game 1, as they should win a Game 1 at home for the third straight series in this year's playoffs.
