Boston Celtics vs New York Knicks Prediction: Key Players Questionable For Boston

Two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference meet Thursday night as the Boston Celtics travel to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Knicks. With both teams already locked into playoff positioning near the top of the standings, this game still carries weight for seeding and momentum heading into the postseason. Boston enters with one of the league’s best overall numbers on both ends of the floor, but could be without some key contributors, while New York has been dominant at home and continues to operate behind elite guard play and strong interior production. Here, I break down this huge matchup and make my Celtics vs Knicks prediction in the NBA.
The Knicks come into this game with strong home form, boasting one of the best records at Madison Square Garden this season at 28-9. They have also taken 2 of the 3 meetings against Boston so far, including a dominant win earlier this year, though most of that competition came without Jayson Tatum on the floor. That success gives them a mental edge entering this matchup.
Boston remains one of the most efficient teams in the NBA, ranking near the top in both offensive and defensive rating. However, availability is a major concern. Several key players, including Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, are dealing with injuries and may not be at full strength. That uncertainty could shift the balance in what would otherwise be a tightly contested game.
New York Knicks
Boston Celtics
Stat | Celtics | Knicks |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 114.6 | 116.8 |
Points allowed per game | 106.9 | 110.4 |
Team Field Goal % | 47% | 48% |
Rebounds per game | 46.5 | 46.0 |
Assists per game | 24.5 | 27.5 |
My projection leans toward New York due to situational factors rather than pure efficiency metrics. Boston has slightly better defensive numbers and overall net rating, but those advantages shrink if key players are limited or unavailable. The Knicks, on the other hand, are playing excellent basketball at home and have already shown they can handle this matchup.
Expect a competitive game with playoff intensity. Brunson’s control of the offense and the Knicks’ ability to generate efficient scoring at home should be enough to beat out a Celtics team that may not be at full strength. With the line close to a coin flip, backing New York to cover the number offers the better value.
