Phillies vs Braves Prediction & Preview: Can Sale Make It 4-0 vs Philly?

The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves open a huge three-game series on Friday, September 11, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET at Truist Park. Aaron Nola (6-10, 4.76 ERA) gets the start against Chris Sale (14-9, 2.10 ERA), who has dominated the Phillies this season, allowing just three earned runs across 19 innings in three Braves wins.
Atlanta comes into the weekend with a four-game lead in the NL East and already owns the tiebreaker, so it's pretty much now or never for Philadelphia. A sweep would put the Phillies right back in the race, but dropping another series could be the final blow to their division hopes.
Let's get into our Phillies vs Braves prediction and where we see the best value in Friday night's opener.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“I like Atlanta here, even with the Braves priced as a pretty clear favorite. Chris Sale has been excellent against the Phillies this season, and Philadelphia has been a below-average offense against left-handed pitching with a 95 wRC+. Aaron Nola has pitched much better lately, but Atlanta just saw him last weekend and gets another shot at him less than a week later. With Sale on the mound and the Braves at home, I think Atlanta has the clear edge in the series opener.”
Atlanta Braves Win Is Priced Around 63¢
Polymarket currently has Atlanta priced around 63¢ to win, while our model gives the Braves a 70% chance of taking the opener. That creates a 7% edge at the current price, with the model projecting a 4-2 Atlanta win.
Don't Expect Another Easy Night for Aaron Nola
Nola has quietly turned things around lately, posting a 2.41 ERA and 1.15 WHIP since the beginning of August. Still, Atlanta gets to see him for the second time in less than a week after facing him last Sunday, which should give the Braves' hitters some added familiarity with his stuff. With Atlanta back at Truist Park and fighting to put more distance between itself and Philadelphia in the NL East, I like the Braves' chances of getting more going offensively this time around.

Believe it or not, Chris Sale seems to be getting better with age. The 38-year-old is putting together one of the best seasons of his career, with his 2.10 ERA currently his lowest since his rookie season with the White Sox in 2010. His 1.01 WHIP and 6.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio are also his best marks since 2018 with Boston.
Sale has been especially good against Philadelphia, allowing just three earned runs across 19 innings with 24 strikeouts and only four walks. Atlanta has won all three of those starts by at least two runs.
Those numbers would be impressive at any point in a pitcher's career, let alone at 38. If it weren't for the ridiculous season Jacob Misiorowski is having, Sale would have a great chance to win his second career Cy Young Award after taking home his first with Atlanta in 2024.
The biggest concern with backing Atlanta right now is an offense that's been in a bit of a funk. The Braves scored just six total runs in their three-game series against Tampa Bay and averaged only 3.64 runs per game in August, 22nd in MLB and well below their 4.56 average for the season.
Matt Olson's recent struggles haven't helped. The All-Star has just one hit so far in September and enters Friday hitless in his last eight games. He also hasn't homered this month after hitting 37 on the season, with his September average down to .125 and his OPS at just .328.
That's a huge drop from his .249 average and .825 OPS for the year. Sale gives Atlanta a big advantage on the mound Friday night, but the Braves may need Olson and the rest of the lineup to give him a little more run support than they've been providing lately.
Philadelphia has been one of the hottest teams in baseball, going 23-12 since the August 3 trade deadline. Kyle Schwarber has led the way with an MLB-best 44 home runs, while trade-deadline addition Luis Arraez has given the lineup another boost. Arraez is hitting an MLB-best .318 this season with six home runs, 58 RBIs and a .780 OPS.
Despite that run, the Phillies are still 82-65 and four games behind Atlanta in the NL East with just 15 games remaining. The Braves have already clinched the season series and the head-to-head tiebreaker, leading Philadelphia 7-3 with just these three games left between them.
That makes this weekend pretty much now or never for the Phillies. A sweep would cut the gap to one game and completely change the division race, while losing the series would leave Philadelphia with very little time to make up ground. Be sure to follow our MLB predictions and picks throughout the final weeks of the season as the playoff races come down to the wire.
