The opening day of T20 World Cup 2026 sees Scotland set to face West Indies on Saturday in a Group C encounter at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Scotland were drafted into the tournament late after Bangladesh withdrew, giving them a unique underdog status and a fresh opportunity on the big stage. West Indies come in as two-time T20 World Cup winners eager to avenge their sole loss to Scotland in the teams’ only previous men’s T20I meeting. Before the action begins in India, continue reading to get my Scotland vs West Indies prediction in World Cup action.
Pick: West Indies to win ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Scotland arrive in India after a turbulent warm-up phase, including a loss to Afghanistan by 61 runs and a defeat to Namibia. Their campaign has been marked by inconsistency but they do have some talent, particularly from players like Brandon McMullen, who has shown power-hitting potential and George Munsey’s big-hitting ability. The Scots only entered the tournament after Bangladesh declined to participate due to security concerns, but they have embraced the opportunity and are confident in their ability to cause an upset in Group C.
West Indies have been preparing for this World Cup with mixed results. Their recent outings include a competitive victory over South Africa in a rain-shortened contest, where Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope starred. Traditionally a strong T20 side, the Caribbean outfit has firepower in both the batting and bowling departments. They will likely view this game as one they should win, particularly at a venue like Eden Gardens, which has historically seen high scores.
In their only previous T20I meeting, Scotland upset West Indies by 42 runs in an ICC T20 World Cup fixture. While that result gives Scotland a psychological edge, West Indies come into this match as favourites based on its overall strength and experience. Their batting depth led by Hope and Hetmyer, combined with spin options like Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, will be key in Indian conditions where spin often plays a significant role.
Scotland XI (probable): George Munsey, Tom Bruce, Brandon McMullen, Richie Berrington (captain), Finlay McCreath, Matt Cross (wicketkeeper), Michael Leask, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal, Safyaan Sharif, Brad Currie.
West Indies XI (probable): Shai Hope (captain), Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph, Sherfane Rutherford, Matthew Forde, Romario Shepherd, Jayden Seales.
Score Projection: Scotland 158 – West Indies 172 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Scotland 28%, West Indies 72% ATS PRO
West Indies enter this match as the clear favourites supported by both recent form and historical strength in T20 cricket. Scotland have the tools to upset WI again, but their inconsistent preparation and unexpected presence in this tournament won't help bridge the gap between the sides. For betting markets, backing West Indies to win with confidence and exploring total runs and key bowler markets may offer the best value while acknowledging that T20 cricket frequently throws up surprises.
