Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings both finished in the bottom two in 2025, and open their IPL 2026 campaigns against each other at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The match carries genuine personal stakes: Sanju Samson faces his old franchise for the first time in CSK yellow, while Ravindra Jadeja lines up against the team he spent 13 years with. Two rebuilds, two revenge arcs, one match.
Match | Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings |
|---|---|
Date | March 30, 2026 |
Format | T20 |
Venue | Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati |
Pitch Report | Slightly batting-friendly surface that can offer something for spinners in the middle overs. Average IPL first-innings score here sits around 160-170. Not as flat as the big city venues. |
Weather | Partly cloudy, temperatures in the high 20s Celsius. Minimal rain risk. High humidity. Dew expected in the second innings. |
Toss Impact | Chasing teams have the better record here. Dew under lights eases conditions for batters in the second innings. Captains will lean toward bowling first. |
Pick: Rajasthan Royals -115
Confidence: 4 out of 5
RR enter this match with a squad that looks genuinely deeper than the one that won just 4 games in 2025. Yashasvi Jaiswal and teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi give them one of the most exciting top-order combinations in the tournament. Riyan Parag takes the captaincy in his home city of Guwahati, and with Jadeja in the middle order after his trade from CSK, the all-round balance looks far stronger than last season. Jofra Archer spearheads a pace attack that also includes Nandre Burger and Sandeep Sharma, and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi adds a dangerous spin option. The one concern is the absence of Sam Curran, ruled out for the entire season with a groin injury. Dasun Shanaka, who smashed an unbeaten 76 off 31 balls against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, arrives as his replacement and slots into a lower-order finisher role.
CSK are trying to rebuild after finishing bottom of the table in 2025. The Samson acquisition is the centerpiece of their new-look squad. He arrives as India's Player of the Tournament from the T20 World Cup and gives Ruturaj Gaikwad's side a genuine match-winner at the top of the order. Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Shivam Dube provide middle-order firepower, while MS Dhoni continues as the finishing option. The bowling is where questions remain. Noor Ahmad and Khaleel Ahmed are the primary wicket-takers, with uncapped youngsters Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer bought for record fees at the auction but unproven at this level. Nathan Ellis is ruled out for the entire season.
The head-to-head sits at CSK 16, RR 15 across 31 IPL meetings. But recent form belongs heavily to RR, who have won 8 of the last 9 encounters since 2020. Guwahati serves as RR's secondary home ground, adding further advantage.
RR probable XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Riyan Parag, Ravindra Jadeja, Shimron Hetmyer, Dasun Shanaka, Dhruv Jurel, Ravi Bishnoi, Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma.
Impact sub: Shubham Dubey or Nandre Burger.
Jadeja's experience alongside a young batting order gives RR balance. Archer's availability is always the key variable with this attack.
CSK probable XI: Ayush Mhatre, Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Prashant Veer, MS Dhoni, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Matt Henry.
Impact sub: Jamie Overton or Shreyas Gopal.
The top 5 looks competitive but the lower order beyond Dhoni is unproven. Their bowling depth without Ellis is a legitimate concern on any surface.
Score Projection: RR 172 - CSK 158
Win Probability: RR 55%, CSK 45%
Home conditions, a stronger all-round squad, and RR's commanding recent record in this fixture all point toward the Royals. Jadeja against his former franchise adds an edge that goes beyond statistics. Back RR at around -115, but CSK's Samson is a genuine match-winner capable of turning the game on his own. If he fires in the powerplay, all bets are off. The total runs market is the smarter play here, with under likely more interesting than the matchup at similar larger venues suggests.
