Key Storylines
- Momentum shift under new coaching: Virginia Tech replaced Brent Pry after an 0–3 start, elevating Phillip Montgomery to interim head coach. The Hokies have responded with back-to-back wins over Wofford and NC State. Their rushing attack exploded in that game against the Wolfpack and the Hokies' confidence is growing.
- Wake Forest struggling in ACC play: Wake Forest is 0-2 in ACC play coming into this week. The Demon Deacons opened their season with non-conference wins against Kennesaw State and FCS Western Carolina. But they have lost to Georgia Tech and NC State and could really use a conference win.
- Defensive weaknesses: Wake Forest has allowed at least 30 points in each of their ACC games to begin conference play. Virginia Tech has given up over 40 points to Old Dominion and Vanderbilt already this year. Either defense is more than capable of laying an egg in this matchup and will need to avoid that to win in Week 6.
Quarterback Play
Virginia Tech’s signal-caller is Kyron Drones. In the win over NC State, Drones completed 20 of 34 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while avoiding turnovers. He has eight touchdown passes to three interceptions and is playing better over the last couple of weeks.
- Wake Forest’s quarterback is Robby Ashford. Ashford has just one touchdown pass through four weeks and has to do more if the Demon Deacons are going to get their first conference win of the 2025 season.

Final Thoughts
Virginia Tech enters this game playing better football than Wake Forest, which has looked dismal in conference play. The Hokies haven't been great against the spread so far this year. But they are likely to cover the number by putting up more points than usual against a Wake Forest defense that has been torched by each of their first two ACC opponents.
