No. 4 Miami heads to Clemson on Saturday night with a 4-0 record and the look of one of the most complete teams in the country. Clemson is 3-1 after a 51-10 opening loss at LSU, but the Tigers have responded with three straight wins and enter this game 2-0 in ACC play. Miami is also 2-0 in the conference, making this an early game with huge implications in the ACC race. Miami has been far more productive, yet Clemson’s recent defensive form and home setting make a 17-point cushion attractive.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Miami has earned its price with a dominant start, but the current spread gives too little credit to Clemson’s defensive improvement, home-field advantage, and the lower-possession game script that Clemson can create.”
Clemson In a Favorable Position
Polymarket lists Miami -16.5, with traders giving the Hurricanes a 52% chance to cover and an 88% chance to win outright. That places the Clemson side of the current spread near 48%. My model puts Clemson’s chance of staying within that number at 52.5%, creating a 4.5% edge over the available market price.
Clemson's Defense Should Compete
The value comes from separating Miami’s chance to win from Miami’s chance to win by 17 or more. The Hurricanes deserve to be clear favorites, but Clemson has allowed just 12.3 points and 282 yards per game across its last three contests after the LSU loss. Last week, the Tigers held Cal to 145 passing yards in a 24-10 road win.

This is the only matchup between ACC teams that are both 2-0 in league play after multiple conference games. Miami sits at 4-0 overall, while Clemson is 3-1 and has recovered from its opening defeat to LSU. A Miami win would strengthen the Hurricanes’ position at the top of the ACC standings and in the ACC futures market, while Clemson has a chance to reshape the race before its open week.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah has been nearly flawless through four games, throwing for 1,211 yards, 14 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Malachi Toney has been his main target with 564 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Miami is scoring 51.8 points per game and producing 588.8 yards per game, numbers that explain the large spread available to those making a Miami vs Clemson prediction.
Clemson’s best route to keeping this close is its defense. The Tigers struggled badly at LSU, but the last three weeks have looked very different. Their pass defense limited Cal’s passing game to 145 yards, and Clemson’s front must pressure Mensah without giving up easy throws to Toney. If the Tigers can force longer drives instead of explosive scores, they can keep the margin inside the number.
Clemson’s offense has averaged only 21 points and 314 yards per game, so this is not a matchup where the Tigers can expect to trade touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds has 521 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Running back Gideon Davidson has been the more reliable piece with 346 rushing yards, 5.9 yards per carry and three scores.
That creates the key tactical question. Miami has allowed only 39.5 rushing yards per game, one of the strongest figures in the country. Clemson needs Davidson to generate enough early-down success to keep Reynolds out of obvious passing situations. Long third downs would play directly into Miami’s speed up front and could turn a competitive game into a runaway.
Clemson starting left guard Elyjah Thurmon is questionable after leaving the Cal game, though defensive tackle Devarrick Woods and nickel Corian Gipson were absent from the initial injury report after missing last week. Miami has several players ruled out, including Joshua Moore, CharMar Brown, Ja’Boree Antoine and Romanas Frederique Jr., while Xavier Lucas was listed as questionable.
Miami has the better offense and the better quarterback with Mensah, so the Hurricanes are the more likely outright winner. The spread asks a different question. Clemson’s improving defense, home-field advantage, and ability to shorten the game with Davidson create enough resistance to make 16.5 points valuable. A final in the range of Miami 31, Clemson 17 is my prediction and lands Clemson +16.5 inside the number.
