The Marshall Thundering Herd head to Atlanta to face the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday afternoon. Marshall needs two wins in their final three games to secure bowl eligibility. They will try to get one of those two wins against a Georgia State team that is 1-8 on the season so far. Before this contest begins in Atlanta, I've got you covered with my Marshall vs Georgia State prediction.
Marshall enters on a two-game skid after falling to James Madison 35–23. They have gone from 4-3 to 4-5 and they still need two wins to get to bowl season. There is no shame in losing to James Madison or Coastal Carolina, as those teams are the top two teams in the Sun Belt East standings this season. But the Herd will have to bounce back from those losses here, otherwise they will have to win their final two games to make a bowl game.
Georgia State’s struggles stretch across both sides of the ball. Their defense has surrendered sizable yardage totals throughout the year, and their offense has lacked the punch to counteract those deficiencies on defense. Even with respectable production through the air, the Panthers have not produced enough sustained drives to remain in contention for much of the season. Their only win came against Murray State of the FCS this season.
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson continues to be Marshall’s focal point at quarterback. He has completed 66.1% of his passes for 1,440 yards with 14 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His mobility has added another layer to Marshall's offense. He leads the team with 487 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.
Cameran Brown is the leading passer for Georgia State this season. He has 1,239 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also leads his team in rushing from the quarterback position with 275 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.
Score Projection: Marshall 38 – Georgia State 28
Win Probability: Marshall 74%, Georgia State 26%
Marshall is the better team going into this game and they are also the team with something left to play for. I expect the Thundering Herd to win this game by double-digits, bouncing back from two straight losses to the best teams in the Sun Belt East. I will lay the points with the Thundering Herd, as they should drop Georgia State to 0-9 against FBS opponents for the year.
