The Big Ten Tournament continues Friday with a quarterfinal clash between UCLA and Michigan State at the United Center in Chicago. Michigan State enters as one of the conference’s top seeds and one of the strongest defensive teams in the league, while UCLA arrives with confidence after advancing through the previous round with a solid victory over Rutgers. Both programs in this UCLA vs Michigan State matchup have been hugely successful throughout their history, but only one of them can advance to the semifinals with a win here.
UCLA arrives in the quarterfinal round after defeating Rutgers 72-59, a game highlighted by Donovan Dent recording a historic triple-double with 12 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. Tyler Bilodeau led the Bruins with 21 points in that contest, helping UCLA win for the fifth time in six games entering Friday’s matchup.
Michigan State enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed and has been one of the Big Ten’s most efficient teams throughout the season. The Spartans feature a balanced offense and a strong presence on the glass, which helped them secure a convincing 82-59 victory over UCLA earlier this season. In that game, Michigan State shot over 52% from the field and knocked down 14 three-pointers while dominating the rebound battle.
Michigan State Spartans
UCLA Bruins
Stat | UCLA | Michigan State |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 78.0 | 78.8 |
Points allowed per game | 70.5 | 67.8 |
Team Field Goal % | 47% | 47% |
Rebounds Per Game | 32.5 | 40.0 |
Assists Per Game | 16.1 | 18.3 |
Michigan State enters this game with a clear advantage in rebounding and interior defense, two areas that proved decisive in the earlier meeting between these teams. The Spartans dominated the paint in that game while shooting efficiently from beyond the arc. If they replicate that performance, UCLA will struggle to keep pace.
UCLA does have a path to an upset if Dent controls the tempo and Bilodeau gets hot from the perimeter. However, Michigan State’s depth, rebounding edge, and efficiency on offense make the Spartans the more reliable side in a tournament environment. I expect a competitive game early before Michigan State’s physical play begins to wear down the Bruins in the second half, leading to a comfortable cover for Sparty.
