St. John’s and Duke will meet in the Sweet 16 of this year's NCAA Tournament on Friday night. Duke remains one of the most talented teams in the field, led by elite freshmen and a frontcourt that can control play on both ends of the floor. With a trip to the Elite Eight on the line, this St. John's vs Duke game should be a battle in Washington, D.C.
St. John’s has been one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 20 of its last 21 games entering this matchup. Their defensive identity has carried them, limiting opponents to around 70 points per game while forcing tough half-court possessions. The Red Storm just handled Kansas behind their physical interior presence and efficient offense, winning at the buzzer to move into the tournament's second weekend.
Duke, however, represents a major step up in talent. As a 1 seed, the Blue Devils feature a deep rotation and NBA-level prospects across the lineup. This game likely comes down to efficiency in the half-court. St. John’s has the defensive structure to slow Duke, but the Blue Devils present matchup problems across the board, especially with their size and scoring versatility. Ejiofor will need a standout performance to keep St. John’s within reach, while limiting Duke’s frontcourt production is critical. I expect Duke to win this game in the end, but for St. John's to cover the spread in what should be a good game in D.C.
