The Mountain West championship game brings together two programs that know each other well with plenty at stake. San Diego State arrives after a tight semifinal win against New Mexico, surviving a defensive battle with a 64-62 victory to reach another conference title game. Utah State advanced with a strong performance in the semifinals, defeating Nevada 79-66 behind balanced scoring and efficient offense. It will be San Diego State vs Utah State to decide who gets the automatic bid out of the MWC on Saturday evening.
Utah State has built its season around an efficient offense and balanced scoring. Several Aggies average double-digit points, and their ability to move the ball and score inside has given opposing defenses trouble throughout the year. The Aggies average almost 83 points per game and also bring confidence into this matchup after a strong semifinal showing that saw five players reach double figures.
San Diego State thrives on the opposite end of the floor. The Aztecs rank among the stronger defensive teams in the Mountain West, limiting opponents to low shooting percentages while forcing turnovers at a high rate. Their semifinal victory was a perfect example, as they slowed New Mexico’s offense and executed in the closing seconds to secure the win.
Another storyline is the recent head-to-head result between these teams. San Diego State earned an impressive 89-72 victory in the regular season meeting in late February, dominating the shooting percentages and controlling the glass. Utah State won the first meeting, though, setting up this rubber match for the conference title.

This championship game features two teams with contrasting styles. Utah State brings scoring and offensive efficiency, while San Diego State relies on defense and disciplined half-court play. The previous meetings between these programs showed how effective the Aztecs can be when their defense disrupts Utah State’s rhythm.
Expect a close game with limited scoring runs. San Diego State’s ability to slow the tempo and force difficult shots gives them a slight edge in a tight contest. Utah State has the offensive talent to win, yet the Aztecs’ defense and experience in pressure situations should help them to cover the spread as the underdog in this one.
