Purdue and Nebraska meet Friday in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal that carries major postseason implications. Purdue arrives after an impressive 81-68 win over Northwestern that showcased its balanced scoring and elite playmaking. Nebraska is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and enters rested and confident after a strong regular season that earned them a bye into the quarters. Here, I break down this Big Ten matchup and make my Purdue vs Nebraska prediction in the betting markets.
Purdue enters this contest with renewed confidence after a convincing tournament opener. The Boilermakers controlled Northwestern from start to finish, building a huge first-half lead while shooting efficiently and dominating inside. The performance suggested that Purdue may have corrected some defensive issues that surfaced late in the regular season.
Nebraska, meanwhile, has been one of the conference’s most disciplined teams throughout the year. The Cornhuskers limit turnovers and share the ball effectively, ranking near the top of the Big Ten in assists per game. Their defensive effort has also been strong, allowing just 66 points per game and consistently forcing difficult shots.
The first meeting between the teams produced a thriller. Purdue jumped out to a large lead before Nebraska stormed back to force overtime. The Boilermakers eventually prevailed 80-77 thanks to late scoring and a key defensive stand. That game revealed how evenly matched these teams are, which should make the rematch one of the best games of the day in college basketball.
Stat | Purdue | Nebraska |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 82.3 | 77.9 |
Points allowed per game | 70.6 | 66.0 |
Team Field Goal % | 50% | 47% |
Rebounds per game | 35.5 | 35.1 |
Assists per game | 19.7 | 18.1 |
This game should be one of the most competitive quarterfinals in the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska has the defensive edge and the benefit of rest, which could prove valuable after Purdue played Thursday. However, the Boilermakers possess the best individual playmaker on the floor in Braden Smith, whose passing can break down even disciplined defenses.
I think we are going to see a one-possession game no matter who wins this contest. I lean toward Purdue getting the win, but Nebraska should be able to cover the spread as an underdog in a game that could go either way.
