The Big Ten Tournament championship brings together two of the conference’s strongest programs as Purdue meets Michigan on Sunday afternoon in Chicago. Michigan has enjoyed an excellent season with a 31-2 record and enters the final after a dramatic semifinal victory. Purdue, seeded seventh in the tournament, has taken a more difficult path but arrives after three strong wins and appears to be finding form at the right time. Here, I break down this huge contest for the Big Ten title and make my Purdue vs Michigan prediction.
Michigan enters the championship with one of the best records in college basketball and is in contention for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines have relied on a strong defensive presence inside and a balanced offense led by veteran playmakers. Their semifinal win showed their ability to close tight games after Yaxel Lendeborg hit the deciding shot with less than a second remaining.
Purdue arrives with confidence after a trio of solid tournament wins. The Boilermakers beat UCLA in the semifinals behind a dominant performance from Oscar Cluff, who recorded 17 points and 14 rebounds. Purdue’s offense is driven by elite guard play, particularly from Braden Smith, whose passing has powered one of the conference’s most efficient offenses. His assist totals have placed him among the national leaders during his career.
Michigan Wolverines
Purdue Boilermakers
Stat | Purdue | Michigan |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 82.0 | 87.9 |
Points allowed per game | 70.1 | 68.9 |
Team Field Goal % | 50% | 51% |
Rebounds per game | 35.6 | 40.2 |
Assists per game | 19.8 | 18.8 |
Michigan enters this championship with the stronger overall record and one of the most balanced rosters in the conference. The Wolverines have shown an ability to win close games and possess a strong defensive interior led by Mara. Their offensive spacing with Cadeau running the offense and Lendeborg scoring from multiple areas makes them difficult to guard. But I think we are in for a close game between two red-hot teams here. I'll take the points with Purdue in what I project to be a one-possession game.
