Key Storylines
- Providence and Butler finished identically in Big East play at 7‑13, reflecting similar levels of inconsistency throughout the year. Providence ended the regular season with two straight losses, while Butler snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating DePaul in their regular-season finale.
- The Friars won their most recent meeting in early February by outscoring Butler 97‑87 in double overtime, a game highlighted by Jaylin Sellers’ 36 points. That performance could serve as a psychological edge. But the Bulldogs won a double-overtime game earlier in the season at the expense of Providence.
Key Players
Providence Friars
- Jaylin Sellers – The senior guard leads the Friars in scoring at around 18.1 points per game and delivered a 36‑point outburst in their last meeting vs Butler. His ability to generate offense will be central to Providence’s chances.
- Stefan Vaaks – Providing secondary scoring, Vaaks has chipped in double digits in several games and adds a passing threat that keeps defenses honest.
- Ryan Mela – A reliable interior presence for the Friars, Mela contributes points and rebounds that help the Friars win possessions.
Butler Bulldogs
- Finley Bizjack – Averaging about 17.1 points per game and capable of explosive scoring nights, Bizjack demands respect from defenses and can carry Butler offensively.
- Michael Ajayi – A consistent double‑digit scorer who also excels on the glass, Ajayi’s production is key if Butler wants to control tempo and score effectively.

Final Thoughts
This Big East Tournament opener looks set to be a tight, competitive battle. Providence’s slight statistical edges in scoring and recent head‑to‑head success give them a modest advantage, and I lean slightly toward the Friars getting the job done. With that said, four overtimes over two games suggests we are in for another close contest here, hence the low confidence rating.
