The Oklahoma Sooners will go to Spokane to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs in an early litmus test for both squads. With both teams coming off dominant openers and Gonzaga playing in front of their home crowd, the Sooners will have a tough task ahead of them if they want to improve to 2-0. Here, I break down this college basketball matchup and give you my Oklahoma vs Gonzaga prediction.
Pick: Gonzaga -11.5
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Gonzaga enters this game off an eye-catching 98-43 home win over Texas Southern. Their frontcourt duo of Graham Ike and Braden Huff were dominant against an overmatched opponent. Ike posted a 13 and 11 double-double in just 23 minutes. The Bulldogs’ defense was suffocating, limiting their opponent to 25.4% shooting. Gonzaga wasn't great shooting the ball from the outside, but they didn't need to be to beat a school like Texas Southern.
Oklahoma also looked sharp in its opener, a convincing 102-66 win over Saint Francis. They got strong production from freshman forward Kuol Atak (18 pts, four threes) and returner Mohamed Wague (16 pts, 10 reb). Transfers such as Nijel Pack and Xzayvier Brown also made an immediate impact with 16 pts each. But the challenge here is steep for the Sooners. They must travel to face a deep, well-coached opponent and try to stop a Gonzaga team that looks like they will dominate the paint in most of their games this season.
Score Projection: Oklahoma 71 – Gonzaga 83
Win Probability: Oklahoma 27%, Gonzaga 73%
It looks like Gonzaga is going to be an elite team again this season. Their frontcourt is going to be one of the toughest to contain in all of college baskeball. In this game, I'm expecting a much bigger game from Graham Ike as he should get more minutes and Gonzaga should cover the spread in a comfortable double-digit win in Spokane.
