Key Storylines
- Michigan has been one of the nation’s most efficient offensive teams all season, averaging roughly 89 points per game while holding opponents under 70 points per game. The Wolverines bounced back nicely from their loss to Duke over the weekend by beating Minnesota by 10 points in their last outing.
- Illinois has surged up the Big Ten standings with a balanced scoring attack and exceptional home success. The Illini are 13-4 in Big Ten play and a win here would be huge for their Big Ten Tournament seeding, as they could just about lock up the coveted triple bye as a top four team in the league standings.
Key Players
Illinois Fighting Illini
- Keaton Wagler: The leading scorer for Illinois at around 18.2 points per game and logging over 33 minutes per game. Wagler’s offensive versatility and scoring consistency make him central to Illinois’ attack.
- Kylan Boswell: A skilled creator and shooter, Boswell contributes nearly 14 points and 4 assists per game, making him a dangerous option off pick-and-roll opportunities and someone who can punish defenses for paying too much attention to Wagler.
- David Mirkovic: The dynamic forward adds about 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and is crucial for Illinois on the boards.
Michigan Wolverines
- Yaxel Lendeborg: Leading Michigan in points at 14.2 per game and rebounds at 7.3 per contest. Lendeborg is dominant inside and a key factor in creating second-chance points while also being to score when plays are called for him.
- Elliot Cadeau: Michigan’s primary facilitator at around 5.5 assists per game, Cadeau sets the tone in offensive pacing and pick-and-roll situations where Michigan generates much of its scoring.
- Morez Johnson Jr.: A versatile scorer who averages around 13 points per game and attacks mismatches down low, Johnson Jr. offers Michigan strength in the post when Illinois crowds the paint to try and stop Lendeborg.

Final Thoughts
This is going to be a tight game throughout, but I give a slight edge to the Fighting Illini on their home floor. The Illini have a historically good offense this year, ranking first in KenPom's offensive efficiency ratings for the year. While Michigan is incredibly gifted on both ends of the floor, I'll take Illinois at home here to set up some intrigue between these teams as conference tournament time approaches, where a rematch between these programs will certainly be possible.
