The NCAA Tournament First Four rolls on with a high stakes game in Dayton as Miami (OH) and SMU meet in a First Four showdown with a trip to the main bracket on the line on Wednesday. Miami (OH) enters with one of the most unusual résumés in the field after compiling a remarkable 31-1 record, but facing questions about strength of schedule. SMU arrives from a power conference with a battle-tested lineup that faced tougher competition throughout the season, but had less success than the RedHawks overall. Here, I break down this First Four contest and make my Miami (OH) vs SMU prediction in the betting markets.
Miami (OH) spent most of the season undefeated before suffering its first loss in the MAC tournament, ending a perfect run. The RedHawks built their record with elite offensive efficiency and strong shooting, converting more than half of their field goal attempts and nearly 40% from three-point range. Their disciplined offense and ball movement allowed them to pile up wins, although critics point to a very soft nonconference schedule.
SMU’s path has been very different. The Mustangs competed in a power conference schedule and produced one of the top scoring attacks in the country. Their backcourt carries the offense, with multiple players capable of scoring 20 points on any given night. SMU also enters the tournament after competing in the ACC Tournament, which adds valuable experience in high-pressure games, but their tournament campaign was a struggle.
SMU Mustangs
Miami (OH) RedHawks
Stat | Miami (OH) | SMU |
|---|---|---|
Points per game | 90.7 | 84.2 |
Team Field Goal % | 52% | 49% |
Rebounds per game | 35.5 | 37.7 |
Assists per game | 16.1 | 16.9 |
This First Four game features a fascinating clash of styles. Miami (OH) arrives with the better record and remarkable offensive efficiency. The RedHawks execute extremely well in half-court sets and share the ball effectively. However, the step up in competition cannot be ignored. Their schedule ranked among the weakest in Division I, which leaves questions about how their numbers translate against stronger opposition. I think that the step up in level of competition will be what does the RedHawks in and I'll lay the points with SMU with that in mind.
