The Coppin State Eagles and Central Michigan Chippewas will face off in the first game of the day in college basketball on Friday. Coppin State is on the hunt for its first win of the season in this neutral-site matchup. They will try to get it against a Central Michigan team playing for the second day in a row. Continue reading to get my breakdown of the game and my Coppin State vs Central Michigan prediction.
Coppin State enters at 0-4 this season after four straight double-digit losses. They average 60.0 points per game and allow 88.5 points per game. Their shooting splits have been poor, especially from distance. But this might be the weakest opponent Coppin State has had early this season and that could help them compete in this one.
Central Michigan comes in at 1-2 and on the second day of a back-to-back. The Chippewas lost on Thursday against the South Alabama Jaguars and will have to overcome fatigue to split this two-game set in St. Petersburg. They average 68.0 points per game offensively and give up 72.3 points per game thus far.
This is a neutral-site game and is being played at a small venue in the state of Florida. The crowd support was minimal and was quiet when Central Michigan played South Alabama at this venue on Thursday. The crowd isn't likely to make much of an impact in this game either.
Score Projection: Coppin State 66 – Central Michigan 78
Win Probability: Coppin State 18%, Central Michigan 82%
Central Michigan will have to overcome playing on a back-to-back if they want to win this game. But I think they will do exactly that against a Coppin State team that hasn't been all that competitive in any of their games this season. Coppin State is ranked as the second-worst team in college basketball by KenPom going into this game. And while I don't think anyone is going to catch Mississippi Valley State in terms of being a bad basketball team, I do think that Central Michigan will cover the number here.
