The first‑round contest in the 2026 NCAA Tournament between the Akron Zips and the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday could be one of the most memorable games from the opening round. Akron enters as the celebrated Mid‑American Conference Tournament champions, thanks to a dominant regular season and an offense that ranks among the top scoring units nationally. Texas Tech, a Big 12 stalwart, has endured its share of impactful injuries down the stretch yet remains battle‑tested against high‑level competition. Before these teams go at it in Tampa, I have made my Akron vs Texas Tech prediction below.

Akron vs Texas Tech Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Akron Zips @ Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Date & Time: Friday, March 20, 2026
- Venue: Benchmark Arena, Tampa, FL
Key Storylines
- Akron has claimed its third consecutive MAC tournament title and finished the 2025‑26 season with a strong 29‑5 overall mark, showcasing one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses that averages near the top of Division I in points per game. Akron’s scoring output and balance have made it capable of pushing tempo and exploiting lesser defensive units.
- Texas Tech has proven tough throughout the season, holding a 22‑10 record in one of the nation’s premier conferences. However, the Red Raiders lost star forward and Big 12 first‑team honoree JT Toppin to a season‑ending ACL injury in mid‑February, a significant blow given his production of 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game before the injury.
- Recent form for Texas Tech has been mixed, with a lopsided loss to Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament, where guard Christian Anderson also exited with a muscle strain. These developments raise questions about the Red Raiders’ ability to execute at full throttle against a cohesive and high‑octane Akron offensive unit.
Key Players
Akron Zips
- Tavari Johnson: Akron’s lead guard and catalyst, Johnson has paced the offense all season with consistent scoring and playmaking ability while steering Akron’s attack at a high tempo against both conference and non‑conference foes.
- Amani Lyles: A consistent force on the boards, Lyles pulls down rebounds at a steady clip and complements Akron’s attack with efficient post play and energy in transition.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
- Christian Anderson: Before his recent injury, Anderson was one of the Red Raiders’ most versatile contributors, averaging just under 20 points and nearly 8 assists per game, while his floor leadership and shooting threatened defenses in isolation and pick‑and‑roll situations.
- Donovan Atwell: With Toppin sidelined, Atwell has emerged as a primary scoring option, showcasing his ability to both shoot from deep and create off the bounce, a vital trait in keeping the Red Raiders competitive on the national stage.

Akron vs Texas Tech Pick & Model Projection
- Score Projection: Akron 82 ‑ Texas Tech 78 ATS PRO
- Pick: Akron Zips +7.5 ATS PRO
- Confidence: 1 out of 5 ATS PRO
- Win Probability: Akron 55%, Texas Tech 45% ATS PRO
Akron’s potent scoring attack and balanced offensive contributions give it a real chance against a Texas Tech defense that has shown vulnerability following recent injuries. The Zips’ ability to move the ball, make threes, and control pace projects well against a Red Raiders squad that may struggle to find consistent scoring beyond its recent top options. I think this is going to be a close game no matter who wins, and that Akron should cover the spread as an underdog.
