Roulette Rules: Understanding the Basics

Roulette is played with a wheel divided into numbered pockets and a table where players place bets. The goal is to predict where the ball will land after the wheel stops spinning.

Players bet on different options like individual numbers, colors, or whether the outcome will be odd or even. Once bets are placed, the croupier spins the wheel, and the ball determines the winning number.

Roulette Wheel & Table Layout

The roulette wheel consists of either 37 or 38 numbered pockets, depending on the version being played (European or American).
In European roulette, there are 37 pockets numbered from 0 to 36, while American roulette includes an additional 00 pocket, totaling 38 pockets.
Pockets are alternately colored red and black, with the 0 (and 00 in American roulette) typically colored green.
The layout of the roulette table mirrors the numbers on the wheel, providing spaces for various betting options.
Different sections of the table represent different types of bets, allowing players to place their chips accordingly.

Inside Bets vs Outside Bets

Players have the option to place bets either inside or outside the main betting area on the roulette table. Inside bets involve betting on specific numbers or combinations of numbers within the grid of numbers on the roulette table. These bets offer higher payouts but have lower odds of winning.

Outside bets, on the other hand, are placed outside the main grid of numbers and typically involve betting on larger groups of numbers, such as red or black, odd or even, or columns. While outside bets offer lower payouts, they have higher odds of winning compared to inside bets.

En Prison and La Partage Rules

En Prison and La Partage are two rules that can come into play in certain variations of roulette, particularly in European roulette. These rules apply specifically to even-money bets such as red/black or odd/even.

En Prison Rule:

Players have the option to take back half of their even-money bet or leave it on the table for the next spin if the ball lands on the 0 pocket.
If the subsequent spin results in a win, the player gets their entire bet back; otherwise, they lose it.

La Partage Rule:

La Partage is similar but slightly different - it means "the divide" in French.
With La Partage, if the ball lands on 0, the player loses half of their bet, and the other half is returned to them.

These rules effectively reduce the house edge on even-money bets, making them more favorable for players. However, not all casinos offer these rules, so it's essential to check before playing if you want to take advantage of them.

How To Play Roulette for Beginners

If you're ready to play roulette online or in a casino, here are some beginner-friendly steps to get you started:

1. Understanding the Roulette Wheel

First and foremost, familiarize yourself with the roulette wheel. Although we discussed the roulette wheel and table layout a bit in the previous section, it never hurts to review the basics!

The standard wheel consists of 37 (in European/French roulette) or 38 (in American roulette) numbered pockets, alternating between red and black colors.

The numbers range from 1 to 36, with an additional green pocket marked 0 (and another 00 in American roulette). Each number is equally likely to come up, and understanding the layout is crucial for making informed bets.

2. Placing Your Bets

Next, it's time to place your bets! Roulette offers a variety of betting options, each with its own payout odds and level of risk. Some common bets include:

Straight Bet: Betting on a single number by placing your chip directly on that number.
Split Bet: Betting on two adjacent numbers by placing your chip on the line dividing them.
Street Bet: Betting on three numbers in a row by placing your chip at the end of the row.
Corner Bet: Betting on four numbers that form a square by placing your chip at the intersection of the numbers.
Six-Line Bet: Betting on two adjacent rows of numbers by placing your chip at the end of the rows.
Even/Odd, Red/Black, Low/High Bets: Betting on whether the number will be even or odd, red or black, or fall within the low (1-18) or high (19-36) range.

Remember to consider the odds and payouts associated with each type of bet, as well as your own risk tolerance and strategy.

3. Spinning the Wheel

Once all bets are placed, the dealer (or in online roulette, the virtual system) spins the wheel in one direction and a small ball in the opposite direction. This spinning action is crucial as it determines the winning number and color. The anticipation builds as the ball gradually loses momentum and settles into one of the numbered pockets on the wheel.

4. Announcing the Winning Number

After the ball comes to rest in a pocket, the dealer announces the winning number and color. In a casino setting, this is typically done verbally, while in online roulette, the winning number is displayed on the screen. Players then check their bets to see if they have any winning combinations.

5. Collecting Your Winnings

If your bet corresponds to the winning number or falls within a winning combination, congratulations! You win according to the payout odds associated with your bet. The dealer (or online system) will then distribute your winnings accordingly. If you didn't win this round, don't worry – you can place new bets for the next spin and try your luck again.

Live Roulette vs Online Roulette

There are two main types of roulette experiences available to players: live roulette and online roulette. Live roulette, whether in-person or online via live streaming technology, offers a more immersive and social experience compared to online roulette.

Players can interact with real dealers and other participants, adding an element of human connection often lacking in purely digital formats. The physical presence of the wheel and ball in live roulette also provides a sense of authenticity that some players prefer.

On the other hand, online roulette, while convenient and accessible from anywhere with an internet connection, lacks the tactile and interpersonal aspects of live play. Instead of a physical wheel, online roulette relies on random number generators (RNGs) to determine the outcome of each spin.

RNGs are algorithms designed to produce a sequence of numbers that cannot be predicted, ensuring fairness in the game. These RNGs are regularly tested and audited by independent agencies to maintain transparency and integrity.

Overall, the choice between live and online roulette often comes down to personal preference. Some players may prefer the convenience and anonymity of online play, while others enjoy the social interaction and authenticity of live roulette.

Best Roulette Strategies & Betting Systems

Over the years, players have come up with many different strategies and betting systems to try to beat the house and win at roulette. Here are some of the most popular ones:

Martingale System: This strategy involves doubling your bet after every loss, with the idea that eventually, you'll win back your losses plus a profit. However, it requires a large bankroll and can be risky if you hit a losing streak.
Fibonacci System: Based on the Fibonacci sequence, this system involves betting according to a mathematical pattern where each bet is the sum of the two preceding bets. It's considered less risky than the Martingale system but still requires caution.
Labouchere System: Also known as the cancellation system, players write down a sequence of numbers and bet the sum of the first and last numbers. If they win, they cross out those numbers; if they lose, they add the lost amount to the end of the sequence. The goal is to cross out all numbers, resulting in a profit.
D'Alembert System: In this system, players increase their bet by one unit after a loss and decrease it by one unit after a win. The aim is to have an equal number of wins and losses, resulting in a small profit.
Paroli System: Also known as the reverse Martingale, players double their bet after each win and return to their initial bet after a loss. It's considered less risky than the Martingale system and can lead to significant profits if you hit a winning streak.

It's important to remember that no strategy can guarantee consistent wins in roulette, as it is a game of chance with a built-in house edge. Therefore, players should approach these strategies with caution and set strict betting limits to avoid significant losses.

What Is the Safest Bet in Roulette?

When it comes to maximizing your odds in roulette, outside bets are widely regarded as the safest option. These bets cover a broader range of numbers, such as Red, Black, Odd, Even, 1–18, and 19–36, offering a balanced risk-reward ratio.

While the payouts may be lower compared to inside bets, the lower risk associated with outside bets makes them a favorable choice for players looking for steady, long-term wins in roulette.

How To Win at Roulette – Top 5 Tips for Success

While there's no guaranteed way to win at roulette, there are plenty of strategies that can improve your chances of success. Here are our team's top 5 tips for beginners:

Understand the Odds: Familiarize yourself with the different types of bets and their corresponding odds. This will help you make informed decisions and choose bets with better chances of winning.
Manage Your Bankroll: Set a budget for your roulette playing session and stick to it. Avoid chasing losses and never bet more than you can afford to lose. By managing your bankroll effectively, you'll be able to play longer and increase your chances of hitting a winning streak.
Play European Roulette: If possible, opt for European roulette over American roulette. The European version has better odds for players because it has only one zero, while the American version has two. This slight difference can significantly impact your overall chances of winning.
Use a Strategy: While roulette is largely a game of chance, many players use betting strategies to help them make decisions. Popular strategies include the Martingale system, the Fibonacci sequence, and the Paroli system. Experiment with different strategies to see which one works best for you, but remember that there's no foolproof strategy that guarantees winnings.
Know When To Quit: It's essential to know when to walk away from the roulette table, whether you're ahead or behind. Set win and loss limits for yourself and stick to them. If you've reached your predetermined win limit, consider cashing out your winnings and taking a break. Likewise, if you've reached your loss limit, it's time to stop playing and reassess your strategy.

Is There a Trick to Roulette?

Yes, there are strategies to improve your chances in roulette. One effective approach is to stick to the table minimum and focus on outside bets. By consistently betting on either black or red, you'll cover a significant portion of the wheel, increasing your odds of winning.

Outside bets offer a 1:1 payout and cover 18 out of 38 potential outcomes, providing a balanced risk-reward ratio for players. This strategy emphasizes steady, conservative gameplay, ideal for newcomers and beginners.

Is Roulette 100% Luck?

Although luck plays a role in roulette, it's not the sole determinant of outcomes. Unlike pure chance games, roulette involves elements of strategy and understanding the odds.

The house edge, typically around 5.26%, gives the casino an advantage, but players can employ tactics such as betting strategies and understanding the physics of the wheel to improve their chances. So, while luck is a factor, a deeper understanding of the game can tilt the odds in your favor.
