Sparks vs Mercury Betting Pick
This game will be played at Footprint Center at 10:00 PM ET on Thursday, July 28, 2022.
During the 2022 WNBA season, no two teams have endured more drama than the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury. Both teams have had chemistry issues and have come to mutual releases of key players. And on Thursday, they will square off in a game with huge playoff implications. In our WNBA picks, the Thursday night Sparks vs Mercury game, in what is sure to be an interesting contest one way or another.
Why Bet The Mercury:
✅ The Sparks just let center Liz Cambage go after she apparently quit on the team. Cambage is inconsistent, but her size made her an integral part of the Sparks on both ends of the floor. Without her, this Los Angeles team is a lot less dangerous, and the Mercury are going to take advantage of that on Thursday night.
✅ Phoenix has a sub-.500 record this season, but they have been a quality team on their home floor. They have gone 8-5 at home on the season, including home wins over the Mystics and Storm, who are more or less locked into the playoffs. Expect another impressive performance at home for the Mercury, as they continue to slowly turn their season around.

✅ Both of these teams have bottom-three defensive ratings in the WNBA. But the Mercury have a slightly better offensive rating, and the playmaking abilities of Skylar Diggins-Smith and Diana Taurasi to lean on here. Both Diggins-Smith and Taurasi have been playing sensational basketball of late, and will continue to do so against the struggling Sparks.
Los Angeles Sparks
The Los Angeles Sparks are in sixth place in the WNBA standings, a half-game ahead of ninth place as they look to hold onto a playoff spot. But things have taken a turn for the worse in their season, as Liz Cambage is no longer on their roster. The Sparks have to figure out how to play without her in a hurry, as they face an experienced Mercury team on Thursday night.
Los Angeles still has some physicality inside in the form of the Ogwumike sisters. But the loss of sheer size from losing Cambage is such a problem. In a game against an undersized Mercury team, having Cambage would have given the Sparks a nice advantage. Instead, they will need to hope that their smaller lineup can get the job done on more level terms.
Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury are no strangers to getting rid of experienced bigs during this season. They had to do the same with Tina Charles just before the All-Star break. But Phoenix has shown some signs of life since then, as they are in the hunt for a playoff spot despite having to make adjustments to their lineups on the fly.
In this game, the Mercury may have trouble containing the Ogwumikes on the glass. But they have a huge advantage at the guard spots. The trio of Diggins-Smith, Taurasi, and Sophie Cunningham have worked very nicely together when on the floor at the same time. Their crisp ball movement and ability to shoot the basketball could be a problem for a poor defensive team in the Sparks.
