The final of the 2019 Women’s World Cup is set to be determined Wednesday in a battle against two nations who are looking for their first World Cup trophy. Netherlands vs Sweden for a spot in the World Cup final.
The Netherlands are playing in just their second World Cup and are now through to their first ever semifinal. The Dutch qualified for their first World Cup in history back in 2015 and made it to the Round of 16 before bowing out to eventual finalists Japan.
Sweden have qualified for all eight Women’s World Cups and are now through to their fourth semifinal appearance. The Swedes are just 1-2 in their previous three semifinals, with their most recent appearance being in 2011, including finishing as the runners-up in the 2003 edition. Sweden fell in the Round of 16 to eventual semifinalist Germany in the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
Who will play the USA in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final? Below is my pick for Netherlands vs Sweden.
Netherlands (+125) vs Sweden (+229): Draw (+220)
Netherlands remained perfect in the 2019 Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 win over Italy in the quarterfinals. The teams were playing to a 0-0 stalemate, but a goals in the 70th and 80th minutes saw the Dutch through to the semifinals. The Netherlands have now outscored opponents 10-3 after beating New Zealand 1-0, Cameroon 3-1, Canada 2-1, Japan 2-1 and Italy 2-0.
Sweden overcame once of their biggest rivals, Germany, in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup. Sweden went down 1-0 in the 16th minute, but answered just six minutes later and then used a goal right after the half to beat the Germans. Sweden have outscored opponents 10-4 after beating Chile 2-0, Thailand 5-0, losing to the USA 2-0, beating Canada 1-0 and beating Germany 2-1.
I like this one to end in a draw during regulation and for Sweden to advance after extra time/penalties.
These two nations have met five times in the past and the series is tied 2-1-2. The Netherlands have won the last two meetings, but the two nations have not met in since 2017.
