Mainz vs RB Leipzig – 05/24/20 – Bundesliga Odds, Preview & Prediction

Two clubs on opposite sides of the table are ready to do battle as Mainz will welcome RB Leipzig on Sunday May 24, 2020. This game will air live on FS1 at 9:30 a.m. EST. Each team played to a draw in their first games back, but each team fell differently about those results. RB Leipzig dominated the game but could only get one ball in the back of the while Mainz overcame a two goal second half deficit to get the draw.

RB Leipzig are very fringe title contenders but are in an all-out battle to remain the Champions League spots. Sitting in fourth place, on 51 points, Leipzig are currently seven points back of league leaders Bayern Munich and will need a miracle to leapfrog three teams and claim the title. More importantly, at the moment, in that Bayer Leverkusen are just one point back of Leipzig and could push the Red Bull club down to the Europa League spots.

Mainz got a big point last weekend and still find themselves four points clear of the relegation playoff position. The club needs points every week to ensure safety, so even a draw this weekend would be a good result for Mainz.

Below is my pick for the Bundesliga action between Mainz and RB Leipzig. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.

Mainz (+500) vs RB Leipzig (-220) Draw (+400)

Mainz looked like the better team for most of their game against FC Koln but had to overcome a 2-0 deficit to get a draw and earn a much-needed point. Down 2-0 60 minutes in, Taiwo Awoniyi got Mainz on the board in the 61st minute and then Pierre Kunde Malong tied the game up 11 minutes later to get Mainz the 2-2 draw. Mainz are now unbeaten in three straight Bundesliga games and five out of their last six overall. Mainz are a bottom half of the table home club as they have just 14 points thanks to a 4-2-7 record.

RB Leipzig had 61% of possession, 23 shot attempts, eight goals, and nine shots on goal, but could only muster a 1-1 home draw against Freiburg. Leipzig could have scored eight goals in this game but missed sitter after sitter and may have cost themselves a chance at the Bundesliga title with the draw. RB Leipzig remain unbeaten in eight straight games but have suffered three straight draws in Bundesliga games. Leipzig are the second-best road club in Germany thanks to a 7-4-2 record and 25 points.

Series History: These two clubs have met seven times in the past and it is RB Leipzig who holds a 4-2-1 advantage. In the most recent meeting, back in November 2019, RB Leipzig came away with a thrashing 8-0 home win.

Game Prediction: RB Leipzig bounces back from last weekend and gets a comfortable win.

2020 Results: 35-26
