It can be argued that the loss of Bill Belichick this offseason is more significant than any on-field additions or subtractions made by the Patriots. But there were a few interesting additions made by this team. Antonio Gibson gives them another quality option out of the backfield, while Sione Takitaki is a nice pickup on defense. While this roster still needs a lot of work, they didn’t do poorly for themselves over the offseason.

Things were so bad for the Patriots on offense last season that they completely changed their offense going into this year. A new coach, new quarterback, and some new skill position additions are what this team is hoping will turn things around. But with Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye leading this year’s offense, there is no guarantee that a turnaround will happen anytime soon.

New England’s defense was put in a horrible position last year, trying to clean up the messes made by Mac Jones and the offense. With that in mind, the Patriots weren’t terrible on defense in 2023. This year they will hope for more breaks as a result of their offense sustaining drives. But that is far from a guarantee and it could be up to Jerod Mayo to step in as head coach and lead his defense to inspired performances right away.
Positives & Negatives
If there is a positive to be found with the Patriots this season, it is that things can’t get much worse than they were a season ago. They have ripped the band-aid off when it comes to pressing the rebuild button and they will hope that things can only go up from here. While that is far from the bright side of the dynasty days for this franchise, there is no pressure of high expectations here either, which can be freeing in a way.
On the flip side, most of this roster is a negative. The quarterback position is arguably the biggest weakness for the Pats, who are without a starting-caliber quarterback again this year. While that could change once Maye learns the ropes a bit, there is no guarantee he will pan out either after what we saw Mitchell Trubisky do after a successful college career at the same school Maye went to.
