Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills won the AFC East last season, winning in Miami in Week 18 to seal up the division title. Josh Allen struggled with turnovers throughout the season, but the defense of the Bills was good enough to make up for any struggles Allen encountered. This year, the Bills are now heavy favorites to win this division once again. There was plenty of concern about how the Bills would perform without Stefon Diggs around for Allen to throw to, but that has not been a problem for Buffalo, who handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss this year.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins had a great chance to win the AFC East this past year, but they fell just short in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills in a winner-take-all game. Miami held a touchdown lead in that game in the second half, but they could not put any points on the board in the final 30 minutes. This year, the Dolphins are in danger of not even making the playoffs, as an early concussion for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa cost him a chunk of this season and left the Dolphins with a huge deficit to try and recover from.
New York Jets
With one move, the New York Jets thought they turned themselves into instant contenders in the AFC East last season. They traded for Aaron Rodgers, which represented a significant upgrade at the quarterback position from Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco. But the Jets lost Rodgers for the season in Week 1, and their hopes of winning this division were lost with him.
This year, Rodgers is on the field for the Jets, with no apparent health issues holding him back just yet. But that has not helped the Jets to become a contender to win this division or even make the playoffs in the AFC. The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh, but they have continued to play poorly after that decision was made, in what has been an embarrassing year for the Jets once again.
New England Patriots
For many years, the New England Patriots were a dynasty at the top of the AFC East. But they finished at the bottom of the division in 2023, as they had the worst record in the AFC last season. New England has drafted a new quarterback in Drake Maye to go with a new head coach in Jerod Mayo. Maye is developing nicely to this point in his rookie campaign. But the Patriots have struggled as a whole, as there are understandably growing pains for this new era of Patriots football.
2024 AFC East Futures Prediction
There was a case to be made that any team in the AFC East can finish in first place before the start of this season, with the exception of the Patriots. But the Bills have run away with the division and it would take nothing short of a miracle for anyone to catch Buffalo, with Josh Allen looking like he could win this year’s MVP and Buffalo looking like they could contend for a title.
