The 2019 Nuremberg Cup is not loaded with highly ranked women, but it does have a former Grand Slam champion, in Svetlana Kuznetsova, and nine top 70 women in the world. Last year Yulia Putintseva had to face the #1 seed in the tournament in the first round, when she knocked off Sloane Stephens, but this go round Putintseva is ranked #38 in the world and is the #1 seed here. Six of the eight quarterfinalists are back from last year and all four semifinalists are back looking to relieve their great runs from last season. Last year’s winner, Johanna Larsson, enters the 2019 edition unseeded, but will have confidence heading into the week.

This year’s edition of the Nurnberg Cup will give some women a chance to win their first title ever or, in some cases, their first in a while.

Semifinal and Champion Predictions

The two semifinal matchups will be #1 Yulia Putintseva vs #4 Alison Riske and #3 Ajla Tomljanovic vs Svetlana Kuznetsova. #1 seed Yulia Putintseva has a pretty clear path to the semifinals this week as she should be able to handle all of the women in her half of the draw. #8 Andrea Petkovic or Irina Begu could put up a fight, but I like Putintseva to get through to the semifinals. I like #4 Alison Riske to get though easily to the quarters and I expect her to get through either #6 Kirsten Flipkens or Sorana Cirstea. #3 Ajla Tomljanovic will have a tough second round matchup against Tamara Zidansek, but I like the Aussie to get by the Slovak and then get past #5 Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarters. Svetlana Kuznetsova is going to get through to the semifinals after being issued a wildcard entry into the Nurnberg Cup. Kuznetsova has a tough draw, but I like her to get by 2018 champ Johanna Larsson, #2 Katerina Siniakova and then Kristyna Pliskova in the quarters.

The final will be #1 Yulia Putintseva vs Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kuznetsova will win her first tournament since coming back from injury.
