WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 25th

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup has its final two participants after a very quick semifinal day. #1 Yulia Putintseva started off the day with a one hour 53 minute, straight set, win over Sorana Cirstea. Putintseva was cruising the whole match not facing a break point until she was serving for the match. Cirstea was able to stay in the match, but Putintseva fought right back and broke Cirstea before finishing off the match the next game. Putintseva will face off against Tamara Zidansek after the Slovak knocked out #2 Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova twice served for the first set, but Zidansek fought her off, won in a tiebreaker and then cruised in the second set. One woman will be winning their first WTA title on Saturday.

Here is my pick for the final of the 2019 Nurnberg Cup.

Yulia Putintseva (-164) vs Tamara Zidansek (+129)

Yulia Putintseva is through to her first final of the 2019 season after knocking off Sorana Cirstea in straight sets Friday. The Kazak has spent a whopping eight hours on the court already this week even though she has lost just one set in her four matches and received a retirement in the first round. This will be Putintseva’s third career WTA final, first on clay, and first since September 2018. Putintseva is 19-12 overall and 7-3 on clay in 2019.

Tamara Zidansek is through to her first career WTA final after a solid straight set win over Katerina Siniakova on Friday. Zidansek has also spent a lot of time on the court, just under seven and a half hours, and has had two three set matches this week. The 21-year-old has won one Challenger clay court title last year in Bol, as she now fights for her first WTA title. The Slovenian is 14-11 overall and 10-5 on clay in 2019.

I like Yulia Putintseva to win her first career WTA title.

Tamara Zidansek leads the overall H2H, and the H2H on clay 1-0. The previous meeting was just a few weeks ago, in the Rabat Round of 32, where Zidansek won 3-6 6-4 6-3.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 24th

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup is down to its final four participants after some marathon matches on Thursday. Sorana Cirstea needed over two hours, and three sets, to knock out Nina Stojanovic and advances to her first semifinal since the 2017 version of this tournament. #1 Yulia Putintseva came out on top after a three hour and 24 minute marathon with Anna Friedsam. Each set saw it take seven games to win and Putintseva was able to outlast the German in a third set tiebreaker to advance to the semifinals. Katerina Siniakova needed three sets, though none were all that competitive, to beat Madison Brengle 1-6 6-4 6-0. Siniakova will be facing Tamara Zidansek who had a nice three set win over Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday. It was a tense third set, but Zidansek fought from a break down to get the win.

The semifinal matchups on Friday will be #1 Yulia Putintseva vs Sorana Cirstea and #2 Katerina Siniakova vs Tamara Zidansek.

Here are my picks for the semifinal round action in Germany.

Yulia Putintseva (-164) vs Sorana Cirstea (+129)

Yulia Putintseva advances to her first semifinal since Guangzhou 2018 with a three set marathon win over Anna Friedsam Thursday. The Kazak has now been on the court for over six hours and fitness could become a factor at this point in the tournament. Putintseva has never won a WTA title, but she did win a clay court ITF title back in 2012.

Sorana Cirstea advances to her first semifinal in two years with a three set comeback win over Nina Stojanovic. The Romanian has now spent close to six hours on the course, so like Putintseva, fitness may become a factor in Friday’s semifinal. The Romanian has never won a clay court title at any level.

I like Yulia Putintseva to pull out a win and advance to the finals.

The overall H2H is tied 2-2, but Yulia Putintseva leads on clay 2-1.

Katerina Siniakova (-152) vs Tamara Zidansek (+120)

Katerina Siniakova is through to her second consecutive semifinal in Nurnberg as she fought back from a 6-1 first set loss, against Madison Brengle, to win in three sets. Siniakova has had an up and down clay court season, as she has made a quarterfinal in Prague and now this semifinal, but also had two first round defeats and a second round defeat. The Czech has won one clay court WTA title in her career.

Tamara Zidansek is through to her second semifinal of the season after a three set win over Veronika Kudermetova in the quarters. Zidansek is now 9-5 on clay in 2019 and 7-5 in main draw matches. The Slovak has never won a WTA title, but she did win a Challenger title on clay in 2018.

Katerina Siniakova gets the win and advances to the finals.

Katerina Siniakova leads the H2H 1-0 with that one meeting taking place on clay.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 23rd

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup was finally able to get some clear skies and get a full day worth of matches in. Most women had to play two times on Wednesday which proved tough for all players involved. #3 Ajla Tomljanovic, #5 Ekaterina Alexandrova and #8 Andrea Petkovic were all ousted in the second round Wednesday as Anna Friedsam, Veronika Kudermetova and Tamara Zidansek all advanced. #1 Yulia Putintseva, #2 Katerina Siniakova, Nina Stojanovic, Sorana Cirstea and Madison Brengle all punched their tickets to the quarters as well.

The quarterfinals on Thursday will feature #1 Yulia Putintseva vs Anna Friedsam, #2 Katerina Siniakova vs Madison Brengle, Veronika Kudermetova vs Tamara Zidansek and Nina Stojanovic vs Sorana Cirstea.

Here are my picks for the quarterfinal round action in Germany.

Yulia Putintseva (-189) vs Anna Friedsam (+150)

Yulia Putintseva fought off three set points, in the first set, to down Mona Barthel in straight sets. The win moves Putintseva into just her second quarterfinal of 2019 and a win Thursday will give the Kazak her first semifinal appearance of the season. Putintseva sits at 5-3 on the dirt in 2019.

Anna Friedsam is into her first quarterfinal since coming back from injury after a 58 minute beat down of #8 Andrea Petkovic. Friedsam faced four break points in the first game of the match and never faced another the rest of the match. It was a great performance by the German as she now sits at 5-2 on the dirt in 2019.

Yulia Putintseva continues her run as the #1 seed and advances to the semifinals.

This will be the first meeting between the two.

Sorana Cirstea (-357) vs Nina Stojanovic (+275)

Sorana Cirstea finally got her 2019 Nurnberg Cup going with two solid wins on Wednesday. The Romanian started the day by knocking out #6 Kirsten Flipkens and then ended her day, and earned herself a quarterfinal berth, with a three set win over Laura Paar. The Romanian enters her third quarterfinal of the 2019 season and will be looking to clear the quarterfinal hurdle for the first time since this tournament in 2017. Cirstea is 5-3 on the dirt in 2019.

Nina Stojanovic earns a berth into her first quarterfinal since Shenzhen 2017 with a nice three set win over Sara Sorribes Tormo on Wednesday. Stojanovic just came back from a long injury layoff, but the Serb currently sits at 4-1 on the dirt in 2019.

Sorana Cirstea gets the win and advances to the semifinals.

This will be the first meeting between the two.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 22nd

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup was interrupted by rain yet again, but they were able to at least get seven matches completed on Tuesday. There were two upsets on the day as Anna Friedsam (+125) knocked out Irina Begu in three sets and Nina Stojanovic (+250) knocked out 2018 finalist Alison Riske. Veronika Kudermetova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Tamara Zidansek, Andrea Petkovic and Laura Paar were all victorious favorites.

Wednesday has 13 scheduled matches with multiple women having to play two matches to make up for all of the rain the first two days of the tournament.

Here are my picks for the action on Wednesday in Germany.

Yulia Putintseva (-227) vs Mona Barthel (+162)

Yulia Putintseva was on her way to an easy straight set victory before Dalia Jakupovic retired down 6-2 3-0 on Sunday. The Kazak has had a rough go of things lately as she has won back-to-back matches just one time since late March. Putintseva has gone 6-6 on clay, in both 2017 and 2018, and she currently sits at 4-3 on the dirt in 2019.

Mona Barthel notched her first main draw win in over two months when she knocked out Paula Ormaechea in three sets on Monday. Barthel has gotten past the second round just one time this season, in Indian Wells, but she might fancy her chances on Wednesday as she owns a 2-0 record against Yulia Putintseva. Barthel is 3-4 on clay in 2019.

Yulia Putintseva gets her first win against Mona Barthel.

Mona Barthel leads the H2H 2-0, but this will be the first meeting on clay.

Andrea Petkovic (-175) vs Anna Friedsam (+125)

Andrea Petkovic notched a straightforward 6-3 6-2 win over qualifier Cagla Buyukakcay Tuesday to get her 2019 Geneva Open underway. The was Petkovic’s first main draw win in nearly a month as she lost her first round match in Prague and lost in the qualifying stages in Rome and Madrid. Petkovic has won four career WTA titles on dirt, but sits at just 5-5 on the surface in 2019,

Anna-Lena Friedsam won her first main draw match since January 2018 with a three sit win over Irina Begu Tuesday. The German was forced to take a 10 month break to repair a bad shoulder and is competing in just her fourth tournament of the season. Friedsam has never had any success on clay, on the WTA tour, but, thanks to qualifying wins, sits at 4-2 on the dirt in 2019.

Andrea Petkovic gets the win and advances to the quarters.

Andrea Petkovic leads the H2H 1-0 with that lone meeting being on the dirt.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 21st

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup got hit with a lot of water Monday as only one maid draw match was able to get completed. Mona Barthel was able to escape with a three set win over Paula Ormaechea Monday just before the rain started coming down.

Tuesday now has 12 main draw matches on the schedule with three matches already in the second set that needs to finish. #2 Katerina Siniakova, #3 Ajla Tomljanovic and #8 Andrea Petkovic all get their Nurnberg Cup campaigns started on Tuesday.

Here are my picks for the action on Tuesday in Germany.

Katerina Siniakova (-250) vs Mandy Minella (+175)

Katerina Siniakova enters Nurnberg looking to string together some wins after back-to-back early exits in Rome and Madrid. Siniakova made a run to the quarters in Prague, but could not get past the second round in her last two tournaments. The Czech is 3-4 on clay in 2019.

Mandy Minella took a step down and competed in an ITF event last week, in Spain, where she made a run the quarterfinals. Minella has suffered a first or second round exit in all four clay court main draws she has entered and has not won a main draw match since April 30th. Minella is 7-6 on clay in 2019.

Katerina Siniakova gets the win Tuesday.

Katerina Siniakova leads the H2H 1-0, but this will be the first meeting on clay.

Sorana Cirstea (-200) vs Kirsten Flipkens (+150)

Sorana Cirstea enters Nurnberg after a surprise upset in Rome last week. The Romanian went a set down early, but fought back to knock out #13 Madison Keys in the Rome first round, but eventually fell to Carolina Garcia the next round. Cirstea has not won back-to-back matches since Budapest in late February, but she has not lost in the first round of any first round main draw matches since the Aussie Open. The Romanian is 3-3 on clay in 2019.

Kirsten Flipkens enters Nurnberg on a three match losing streak and has not won a main draw match since early April in Monterrey. Flipkens won the first set of her last match, 6-0 against Anastasija Sevastova, but was not able to finish the job as she lost in three sets. Flipkens is 0-3 on clay in 2019.

Sorana Cirstea gets the win.

Sorana Cirstea leads the overall H2H, and the H2H on clay, 1-0.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 20th

The 2019 Nurnberg Cup got underway on Sunday with three main draw matches that featured two retirements and a quick straight set win. Madison Brengle prevailed in straight sets over Evgeniya Rodina to advance to the second round. Yulia Putintseva and Sara Sorribes Tormo each received wins via retirement when both were leading by a set.

10 more first round matchups take place Monday with #3 Ajla Tomljanovic, #4 Alison Riske and #5 Ekaterina Alexandrova all making their debuts this week. The match of the day is Svetlana Kuznetsova taking on the defending champions Johanna Larsson.

Here are my picks for the action on Monday in Germany.

Ekaterina Alexandrova (-189) vs Jana Cepelova (+137)

Ekaterina Alexandrova enters the Nurnberg Cup looking to get her first win since early March. The Russian is currently on a seven match losing streak and has won just two sets since setting foot on the European clay. Alexandrova is currently 0-5 on clay in 2019. The Russian did not compete during this week last season.

Jana Cepelova prepares to play in just her fourth WTA main draw of the season after successfully qualifying for the Nurnberg Cup. The Slovak has won the first round match in each of her four clay court tournaments this season and will be looking to make it five in a row on Monday. Cepelova is 5-3 on clay this season. She did compete during this week last season.

I like Ekaterina Alexandrova to end her losing streak.

This will be the first meeting between the two.

Alison Riske (-250) vs Nina Stojanovic (+175)

Alison Riske enters the Nurnberg Cup on a four match losing streak and having lost six out of her last seven overall. Riske has not even won a set in any of the six matches she has lost during this lapse in form. The American is 0-2 on clay in 2019. Riske fell in the final here last season.

Nina Stojanovic enters her first main draw of the season after successfully qualifying for the Nurnberg Cup on Sunday. Stojanovic injured herself in October 2018 and just recently returned to action in early May. The Serb made it to the quarterfinals of the ITF tournament in Spain, in her first tournament back, but then fell in the first round of her second tournament. Stojanovic has not gotten a main draw win since January 2017. She did compete during this week of the season last year.

Alison Riske gets the win Monday.

This will be the first meeting between the two.

WTA Nurnberg Cup Best Bets – May 19th

Tennis never sleeps as 32 women head to Nurnberg, Germany looking to get a few more matches under their belt before Roland Garros next week. The tournament really gets started Monday, but there are three main draw, and six final qualifying, matches on Sunday. Yulia Putintseva, Katerina Siniakova, Ajla Tomljanovic, Alison Riske and Ekaterina Alexandrova are top five seeds this week with last year’s champ, Johanna Larsson, and former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova entering the draw as well.

The #1 seed Yulia Putintseva gets the week started on Sunday with the best matchup being Vera Lapko and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Here are my picks for the first day of action in Germany.

Madison Brengle (-278) vs Evgeniya Rodina (+200)

Madison Brengle enters her first WTA tournament since her first round exit at Charleston back in early April. Since then the American has been competing on the ITF circuit where she has had mixed results. Brengle made a run to the final in Charlottesville, but suffered first round exits in the other three ITF tournaments she entered. Brengle is 4-5 on clay in 2019. The American fell in the second round here last season.

Evgeniya Rodina enters Nurnberg with just one win in her last 10 matches and has won just two sets total during that 10 match span. Rodina has competed in four clay tournaments in 2019, three WTA and one ITF, but has one just two sets and one time during that span. Rodina is 1-4 on clay in 2019.This week last season the Russian unsuccessfully tried to qualify for the French Open main draw.

Madison Brengle gets a much needed win.

Madison Brengle leads the overall H2H 2-1 and leads 1-0 on clay.

Yulia Putintseva (-400) vs Dalila Jakupovic (+275)

Yulia Putintseva enters Nurnberg as the #1 seed and looking to make some last minute adjustments heading into the French Open. The Kazak has competed in three clay court tournaments this season and she has won at least one match in each tournament, which includes a Round of 16 run in Madrid. Putintseva is 3-3 on clay in 2019. She fell in the second round here last season.

Dalia Jakupovic enters Nurnberg looking for her first WTA clay court win of 2019. Jakupovic fell in the first round of qualifying in Stuttgart and the main draw first round of Prague, so she took a step down and won an ITF match in Slovakia a few days ago. Jakupovic is 1-3 on clay in 2019. The Slovak was competing in French Open qualifiers during this week last season where she fell in the final round, but made the main draw with a lucky loser spot.

Yulia Putintseva gets the win Sunday.

This will be the first meeting between the two.
