DraftKings, a Boston-based and highly ranking mobile sportsbook app, announced their intended partnership deal with the Chicago Cubs baseball club, on Thursday morning. This deal makes the tech firm Chicago Cubs’ exclusive betting partner, stretching friendly confines even further.
Matt Kalish, president, and co-founder of DraftKings said that this was indeed a great move, with the best interest of avid bettors at heart. “This is truly a historic moment, as we are thrilled to align with the renowned Chicago Cubs franchise and iconic Wrigley Field to provide sports bettors in Chicago with revolutionary sports betting experience”, he said. “As two organizations that share a mutual passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we look forward to working in collaboration with the Cubs, an organization steeped in tradition, and making our presence felt in and around Wrigleyville,” he continued.
In support of Matt’s sentiments, Crane Kennedy, Chicago Cubs’ President of Business Operations, had this to say, “DraftKings has been a great partner for a number of years and we are excited to expand this relationship as sports betting grows rapidly in Illinois.” “An increasing number of sports fans want to integrate sports betting into their game experience, and we’re excited to be one of the first to engage in developing a retail sportsbook at a professional sports venue,” he went on.
Sports Betting Legalization in Illinois
Sports betting has been going through a revolutionary change, with most gamblers intending to integrate it into their online gaming experience. Illinois has not been left behind on the journey, and last year saw the state legalize sports betting. This legalization saw arenas and major stadiums pursue the required betting license, at a fee totaling to $10.
Following a multi-year initiative, DraftKings and Chicago Cubs are looking to open a one-of-a-kind physical sportsbook at Chicago Cubs’ legendary ballpark, Wrigley Field. The plans require DraftKings to offer players both online access and a mobile platform. “We want to build the biggest retail sportsbook in the country right in the heart of Wrigley, with an unrivaled experience, food and beverage, and the ability of a fan to go there pregame, make bets, go to the game and sweat and come back and cash their tickets on the way out,” Matt said.
In order to construct a sportsbook of this kind, DraftKings will be required to get approval from the state of Chicago. The specific documentation is a Masters Sports Wagering License from the Illinois Gaming Commission. Given the unforeseen challenges that both partners will have to navigate, the sportsbook’s opening timetable was not provided in the announcement.
Draftkings’ Presence in Illinois
DraftKings has a well-established presence in Illinois, given the Casino Queen Sportsbook that ‘pitched camp’ in East St. Louis last month. Incidentally, this coincided with DraftKings’ mobile app launch. DraftKings is making attempts to remain steps ahead by way of establishing themselves well in Illinois, a recent entrant into the market of legalized sports betting. With the direction that sports gambling is taking, this partnership is definitely a smart move for both partners.
