The Detroit Pistons will wrap up a three-game road trip Wednesday at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, so I’ve prepared the best betting pick and tips for their Eastern Conference clash against the Atlanta Hawks.
According to BetAmerica Sportsbook, the hosts opened as 6-point favorites with a total of 220.5 points. They still miss Bogdan Bogdanovic, Danilo Gallinari, and Khris Dunn due to injuries, while the Pistons are without Killian Hayes.
Detroit couldn’t beat the shorthanded Miami twice
The Detroit Pistons (3-10; 7-5-1 ATS) are coming off a two-game set at the Miami Heat. After a surprising 120-100 victory in the opener, though Miami missed a bunch of guys due to the medical protocols, the Pistons suffered a 113-107 defeat as 6-point road dogs.
Detroit has dropped three of its last four games overall, while the Pistons are only 2-15 straight up and 8-8-1 ATS in their previous 17 outings away from home. Also, they’ve covered the spread only three times in their last 20 showings on the road as dogs of six or fewer points.
The Pistons have struggled since the opening night, starting the season with four consecutive defeats. They are scoring 107.8 points per 100 possessions (21st in the NBA) on 42.5% shooting from the field (30th) while yielding 112.4 points in a return (24th) on 49.7% shooting from the field (29th).
Atlanta outlasted the hapless T-Wolves to stop a two-game slide
The Atlanta Hawks (6-7; 6-7 ATS) are coming off a 108-97 victory to the Minnesota Timberwolves, tallying their second straight win on the home court while snapping a two-game skid overall. They played tough defense, limiting the T-Wolves to 39.6% shooting from the field, but the Hawks committed a whopping 26 turnovers.
Trae Young finally got things going with 20 points and 13 assists. Clint Capela dominated in the paint, posting a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds, while De’Andre Hunter added 25 points and three steals.
The Hawks are scoring 110.2 points per 100 possessions (15th) while making 43.7% of their field goals (28th) and 34.0% of their 3-pointers (24th). They are yielding 108.2 points in a return (8th) on 43.6% shooting from the field (2nd).

Detroit:
- 2-12-3 ATS in the last 17 road games as underdogs of six or fewer points
Atlanta:
- N/A
The Winner Prediction
With the worst field goal percentage and the second-worst opponents field goal percentage in the league, the Pistons have to be considered as a really bad team. The Hawks haven’t impressed either, but they certainly possess more talent than Detroit.
Back in Week 2, the Hawks outlasted the Pistons 128-120 as 10-point home favorites in their first meeting of the season. They led by as many as 24 points, and I expect the Hawks to dominate the Pistons once more.
NBA Pick: Take Atlanta -6.0 at -110
The Total:
The over has hit in nine of the last ten encounters between Detroit and Atlanta including the previous five. Also, five of Detroit’s last eight contests went in the over, but the Hawks’ last nine games went in the under.
These are some crazy betting trends, so I would stick with the stats. Both teams have been poor offensively so far and are among the worst shooting teams in the league. Atlanta surprisingly plays solid defense this season, recording the 10th-fastest pace of 100.9 possessions per 48 minutes. Detroit averages 98.7 possessions per 48 minutes (23rd), so I’m backing the under.
Pick: Go under 220.5 points at -110
