Many wondered whether Boogie Cousins would be the same after tearing his achilles in early 2018, but his recent games with the Warriors are showing he’s still got it. His technical fouls have seemed to follow him, his latest for throwing a shoe off the floor against the Charlotte Hornets.
More than a year ago, Demarcus Cousins suffered one of the worst injuries a play can have – the achilles tear. The injury that ultimately ended Kobe Bryant’s career, but didn’t end up having a huge impact on Dominique Wilkins.
In his 48 games played for the Pelicans during the 2017-2018 season, Cousins was averaging 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game. This injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, and would serve as the last game Demarcus played with the Pelicans. During the 2018 free agency period, Demarcus infamously signed a contract with the already-stacked Golden State Warriors.
With the Warriors already having the first three options on offense covered in the form of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson, there wasn’t any pressure for Demarcus to be productive, especially not anytime soon. Demarcus rested until January 18th, when the Warriors played the Clippers. In his return game, Demarcus scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, but also fouled out.
Being the fourth option on offense, Demarcus is now averaging 14.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game on just 24.4 minutes a game. While his averages are far below his numbers before his injury on the Pelicans, he is no longer the primary option on offense, and therefore handles the ball much less. Boogie is shooting 11 field goals and 5 free throws per game, down from 18 field goals and 8 free throws with the Pelicans.
Regardless of his averages, the Warriors are 12-2 with Cousins in the lineup. He’s also looked much improved as of late, posting 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks on 9-15 shooting in Monday night’s win against Charlotte. Not bad for a 7-footer that tore his achilles just a year ago.
Here come the technicals…
Demarcus is no stranger to technical fouls. He’s received several over his career, and has been suspended for reaching the limit of 16 in a season in multiple years. Having a new change of scenery doesn’t mean the technicals will stop. Despite only playing 14 games with the Warriors, Demarcus has already received 5 technicals. Yikes!
Boogie’s latest technical came during his excellent game against the Charlotte Hornets. The shoe of Hornet’s player Jeremy Lamb came off around where Demarcus was near the free throw line. Demarcus simply threw it to the sideline, and received a technical for the act. Understandably Demarcus was outraged, not understanding what he was supposed to do with the shoe in the situation.
The NBA ultimately agreed with Cousins, rescinding his technical against the Hornets on Tuesday afternoon. Cousins jokingly mentioned how he’ll just roll his ankle and step on the shoe next time. He means in jest, but for a 7-footer coming off an achilles injury, that’s the last thing you want to hear.
The Warriors next game is against the Miami Heat on Wednesday. It’s the second in the middle of an Eastern road trip for the Dubs, being 1-0 so far with their win against Charlotte. After dropping two of their last four games, the Warriors need to build momentum moving towards the playoffs.
