Jonathan Pearce vs Darren Elkins Fight Preview
It has become no secret at all that Jonathan Pearce has found his correct weight class at featherweight. After splitting a pair of fights at lightweight, Pearce has rattled off four straight wins since his drop down in weight class. In his most recent fight, Pearce was matched up with a credentialed wrestler in Makwan Amirkhani. Pearce showed he can do solid work on the feet but also continued to show off his extremely well rounded game. Pearce is going to be the more dynamic and quicker striker in this matchup. He will also mix in takedowns and likely show off the top game that has garnered him his current win streak.
Darren Elkins is now 38 years old and remains a solid name in the division. With Pearce’s lone loss at lightweight coming to Joe Lauzon, this has the feel of the promotion wanting to give Pearce a feather in his cap against a veteran and credentialed name. Elkins is a gritty well rounded fighter in his own right, even at his advanced age, but will not have any area of advantage in matchup. Elkins also holds the unquantifiable record of having the most scar tissue on his face of any fighter ever. Elkins essentially gushes blood in every fight, and it does not take much to open him up. This is especially significant in a fight against a fighter like Pearce, who has found four ground stoppages in the UFC, three of which via ground and pound. Even if the actual damage being done by Pearce is not quite enough for a stoppage at periods, there is a surprisingly realistic chance that a cut would be enough to stop the fight in between rounds.
