Amanda Ribas vs Tracy Cortez Preview
Amanda Ribas gets a step down in level of competition as she comes off a controversial split decision loss to Katlyn Chookagian. That was on the heels of a win over top ten Virna Jandiroba in her initial move up to flyweight. This is a better weight class for her, as the cut to 115 was taking too much out of her. Ribas striking has made significant improvements and is catching up with her high end BJJ game. Her wrestling is middle of the road, and that will not be an area of advantage in this matchup. However her strong hips and judo should be an equalizer in that aspect. She will be the superior fighter on the mat, and the fighter that will sweep or move to finish whenever this fight hits the mat.
Tracy Cortez gets a large step up in level of competition and enters the most difficult fight of her career. The step up is well deserved, however the specific fight is likely a stylistic problem for her. Her striking remains an area requiring improvement at this level, and she will be at a disadvantage in this matchup. Where she has won her previous fights is with her strong wrestling and ensuing control. That may well be an issue with the raised level of competition, as Ribas will have ways to combat that game plan. The high end judo from Ribas could very well see Cortez as the fighter ending up on bottom from takedown entries. Ribas is also the superior fighter on the floor. Outside of perfect wrestling and edging a decision on control time, it is difficult to identify the paths to victory for Cortez.
