Total O/U: 8.5

After dropping the first two of this four-game series, the New York Mets (33-36) will look to rebound against the St. Louis Cardinals (35-33). Michael Wacha (4-2 5.63 ERA) hits the mound for the visiting Cardinals and will be going up against Noah Syndergaard (4-4 4.45 ERA) of the Mets.

Despite the 4-2 record, Wacha has been getting torched on the mound for most of the season. His last start of the season, against the Miami Marlins, was his best of the season, six scoreless innings only allowing five hits. His two starts prior were some of his worst of the season. Against the Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals Wacha pitched a total of 5 ⅔ innings and allowed 12 earned runs and four homers. Half of his ten starts this season Wacha has allowed four or more earned runs. His strikeout-to-walk ratio isn’t flattering at 52/34 and even worse is his WHIP, 1.71.

Syndergaard hasn’t been the dominant pitcher the Mets were hoping for this season. He’s flashed the vintage Thor that was expected from him this season a couple of times this year, including a complete game shutout back in early May. His most recent start was his second-best of the season, seven scoreless innings against the hot-hitting Colorado Rockies. Syndergaard only allowed one hit in the game. His WHIP isn’t as low as he would like at 1.20,  but he does have 88 strikeouts in 89 innings.

Both pitchers are coming off of one of their best outings of the season, but neither has been able to sustain success so far this season. Having seen both pitchers throw a lot this year, Syndergaard is the better pitcher in this matchup. Wacha’s control has been a major issue and he doesn’t make it too far into games. The Cardinals used their two best relievers last night, so their bullpen could be shortened on a day when they could need four or more innings from them.

The Mets bullpen has cost them the first two games of this season, but their best reliever Seth Lugo will be available for two innings today if needed. I like Thor to have the better game and go an extra inning or two. Both pitchers will probably allow a few runs, but I expect the Mets to do more damage against Wacha and tag the Cards bullpen as well. The Mets and the OVER are the two best picks in this game.
