Total O/U: 8.5

The slumping Seattle Mariners (18-16) look to rebound in the second game of their series against the Cleveland Indians (17-13). The Mariners will look to Mike Leake (2-3 4.98 ERA) to help them get back into the win column and will be going up against Carlos Carrasco (2-3 5.86 ERA).

Leake has allowed at least two earned runs in each start this season and is coming off of a horrible performance against the Texas Rangers. The Mariners lost the game 15-1 and Leake allowed nine runs (five earned),10 hits, and two home runs across five innings. His last outing against Cleveland was one of his best of the season, six innings and only two earned runs, but the Mariners still lost 4-2.

Carrasco had his best start of the season against the Mariners, seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. Carrasco had two rough outings in his first three starts this season, allowing six earned runs to Kansas City and Minnesota, but rebounded with two scoreless starts that saw him pitch 11 innings and only allow five hits while striking out 16. He pitched six scoreless innings in his last start, which was against the Houston Astros, but Houston got to him in the seventh inning where they scored four runs, snapping Carrasco’s scoreless inning streak at 17.

Leake likes to throw strikes (seven walks in 34 ⅓ innings), so as long as Cleveland is swinging, they should be able to put the ball in play a lot, which should lead to some good run production. Despite his low walk count, Leake has a WHIP of 1.51, (45 hits in 34 ⅓ innings), so the opportunity will be there for the Indians. Carrasco has started to turn his season around, and if he had been pulled after six innings in his last start he would still have his 17 innings scoreless streak and we would be talking about him as one of baseball’s hottest pitchers at the moment. I think he continues to pitch well, and going up against a Mariners offense that can’t seem to find many runs, I think the Indians take this one in another low scoring affair.
