An interleague battle featuring two teams heading in opposite directions begins Wednesday, September 2, 2020, when the San Diego Padres (22-15) visit the Los Angeles Angels (12-24). The Padres sit in second place, currently in the playoffs, in the NL West and trail the Dodgers by five games. Los Angeles is bottom of the AL West and eight games out of a playoff spot. This game will air live on ESPN+ at 9:40 p.m. EST.
The Padres won three of four against the Colorado Rockies in a wraparound series and earned their day off yesterday. San Diego won game one 10-4, game three 13-2, and game four 6-0. It was total domination in the Padres three wins. Colorado did come away with a tight 4-3 win in game two.
Los Angeles headed into their off day after splitting a wraparound series against the Seattle Mariners. The Angels won the first two games of the series, 3-2 and 16-3, but could not win the series. Seattle won game three 2-1 in 10 innings and then finished the series with another 2-1 win.
Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Angels. All odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook.
San Diego Padres (-180) at Los Angeles Angels (+150)
Pitching Matchup: Dinelson Lamet (2-1, 2.35 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) vs Julio Teheran (0-2, 9.17 ERA, 1.70 WHIP)
Dinelson Lamet had a strong start to the season but is coming into this one after his worst start of the year. Lamet started the season by giving up one earned run or less in his first five starts, though he did give up two runs, one unearned, early in the season. Two starts ago Lamet gave up two earned runs to the Texas Rangers and last time out he gave up three earned runs to the Mariners.
Julio Tehran has had a rough 2020 as he has given up three earned runs or more in every appearance besides his first of the season. In his last two appearances combined, Teheran has given up a combined 10 hits and seven earned runs in 9.2 innings pitched.
It has been the Fernando Tatis Jr. show in San Diego this season as the electric shortstop has been the talk of all of baseball. Tatis Jr. leads the Padres with a .313 batting average, .395 on base percentage, .660 slugging, and 1.055 OPS. The shortstop also leads the team with 13 home runs and 33 RBI’s.
It hasn’t been a great season for Los Angeles, but a few hitters have stood out at the plate. Shortstop David Fletcher has been a surprise and leads the team with a .313 batting average, while new signing Anthony Rendon leads with a .435 on base percentage. Center fielder Mike Trout leads with a .602 slugging and .960 OPS. Trout also leads with 12 home runs and 32 RBI’s.
MLB Predictions: I am backing the San Diego Padres Wednesday night.
