Total O/U: 9
The Los Angeles Angels (38-40) will try to avoid getting swept today by the St. Louis Cardinals (40-36). Trying to prevent that from happening will be Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs (6-6 4.61 ERA). Looking to help get the sweep for the Cardinals will be pitcher Miles Mikolas (5-7 4.48 ERA).
Skaggs is coming off of his best start of the season, 7 ⅓ innings allowing just three hits and one earned run against the Toronto Blue Jays. He will be making his 14th start of the season tonight and has had a balanced season. Six of his 13 starts he has allowed two earned runs or less. Longevity hasn’t been his biggest asset this season as he has only pitched seven full innings twice and averages about 5 ⅓ innings per start.
Mikolas isn’t much of a deep outing guy himself either, but he does have five starts with at least seven innings pitched (seven with five innings or less). Mikolas is coming off of one of his best starts of the season as well, six scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins. Home runs have been an issue for him this year, allowing 14 in 84 ⅓ innings.
Both Skaggs and Mikolas are having a similar season on the mound. Skaggs has a higher strikeout and walk average per start, which leads to higher pitch counts and fewer innings. The Cardinals bullpen is ranked seventh in ERA while the Angels are 19th. Los Angeles is struggling right now and the Cardinals are starting to look good again. In an even starting pitching matchup like this, the hot team is usually the right team to go with. Look for both starters to have average days on the mound, but St. Louis should pull away once we get to the bullpens. I expect this game to go OVER as well and a 10 MPH wind blowing out of Busch Stadium at game time will help.
