The Baltimore Orioles (10-16) will be sending out Alex Cobb (0-1 11.88 ERA) to take on Martin Perez (2-0 5.31 ERA) and the Minnesota Twins (13-9).
Cobb’s last start was at home against the Minnesota Twins and it was a start Cobb would like to forget. The Twins jumped on Cobb from the start and chased him from the game after just 2 ⅔ innings. Cobb surrendered 10 hits and nine earned runs, including three home runs in his short outing. His first start of the season was better, but still not great. Cobb made is 5 ⅔ innings against the Yankees and gave up two home runs in that game that only resulted in two earned runs.
Perez dueled with Cobb in the April 20th meeting of these two teams that saw 23 runs scored in that game. Perez got the win against a struggling Cobb, but Perez’s start wasn’t the greatest either. Perez lasted six innings thanks to the huge lead that the Twins got, but he still allowed four earned runs and only struck out two batters while walking one (also allowed two home runs). His prior start was a great outing against the Toronto Blue Jays that saw him going six innings and only allowing one earned run. Perez had three prior appearances out of the bullpen prior to his start against Toronto.
This game should be high scoring, no doubt. However, Perez has shown that he is capable of pitching six-plus innings and only allowing a run or two. Cobb has had limited innings so far this season, but it seems that anytime he steps on the mound, balls will be going out of the park. The Twins are third in runs per game this season and ninth in total home runs, they should have no problem getting to Cobb early again, similar to what they did last week against him. The Twins should win another high scoring game against the Orioles.
