Betting Odds: Atlanta-151/San Francisco+136

Total O/U: 7.5

The Atlanta Braves (26-23) and the San Francisco Giants (21-26) split the first two games of this four-game series. Looking to win game three for the Braves is Max Fried (6-2 2.86 ERA) and he will be battling against Jeff Samardzija (2-2 3.69 ERA) of the Giants.

Fried has been one of Atlanta’s best pitchers in this early part of the season. After two appearances out of the bullpen to start the season, Fried will be making his tenth start of the season tonight. On the season Fried has a WHIP of 1.13 and has 46 strikeouts to 11 walks in 50 ⅓ innings.

Samardzija’s season has been pretty good as well. In 46 ⅓ innings, Samardzija has a WHIP of 1.19. Samardzija will also be making his tenth start of the season in this game. His last three starts haven’t gone so well, two of which were against the Cincinnati Reds. In those three starts, Samardzija has pitched just 14 ⅓ innings and has allowed 1o earned runs, including five home runs and six walks.

Fried should be able to put together a good outing against a Giants offense that ranks 25th in runs per game and 24th in hits. On the other side, The Braves are 13th in the league in runs per game and fifth in hits. Samardzija has walked six batters in his last two starts and the Braves are ninth in the league in walks drawn.

Look for the Braves to run up Samardzija’s pitch count early in this one and chase him from the game before the sixth. The Giants have the sixth best bullpen in the league in terms of ERA, so the Braves will be looking to do their damage against Samardzija. I expect Fried to pitch into the seventh in this one, possibly even later, limiting the Braves bullpen innings. The Braves get the early lead and manage to hold on for the win in a lower scoring game.
