The revamped XFL will get underway this weekend with all eight teams kicking off their new franchises. The first game will be on Saturday February 8, 2020 as the Seattle Dragons take on the DC Defenders. We’ve never seen these players, or coaches, play together, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some value in the futures market for this season.
XFL Championship Odds – odds via BetMGM
- Dallas Renegades +250
- New York Guardians +350
- Los Angeles Wildcats +450
- Tampa Bay Vipers +550
- Houston Roughnecks +750
- DC Defenders +750
- Louis Battlehawks +1000
- Seattle Dragons +1200
The XFL will have a 10 game schedule, with no byes, and is broken into two four-team divisions this year. DC, New York, Tampa Bay and St. Louis will all be in the XFL East division while Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston will all be in the XFL West. The top two teams from each division will make the division championship game and the winners of those two games will play for 2020 XFL Championship.
NFL fans will notice some familiar faces on the field, but some of the rules they are used to will be a bit different, so keep an eye out on kickoffs, PATs and, especially, for the double-forward pass.
The Dallas Renegades have the best combination of talent, and the best coach, so it will all be up to chemistry for the Renegades this season. Dallas will be led by Landry Jones at QB, Cameron Artis-Payne at RB and Jerrod Heard at WR. On defense Frank Alexander and Deshaun Phillips will be familiar names to NFL fans. Of course, the biggest star on the Renegades is former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops roaming the sidelines. Dallas is rightfully the favorite to being the season.
New York is the second favorite heading into the season as they are led by Kevin Gilbride as head coach and Matt McGloin at QB. Nick DeLuca will be a familiar face for college football fans as the linebacker will look to lead a strong a defense. Their +350 odds seem a bit lofty based on how the roster looks on paper.
Los Angeles is one of the teams I’m most excited about as they have the best QB in the league, Josh Johnson, an exciting RB in Elijah Hood, and former NFL WRs Nelson Spruce and Tre McBride. The Wildcats also have Shawn Oakman and Taiwan Jones on the defensive side of the ball as head coach Winston Moss will look to bring LA a championship. LA at +450 is great odds at the moment.
Tampa Bay is also an intriguing team based on QB Aaron Murray, RB Mack Brown and WR Stacy Coley, and a defense coached by Jerry Glanville, so Tampa is another mid-odds team that could be around come championship weekend. Head coach Marc Trestman has an exciting backfield to work with in Tampa.
The most electric team in the XFL will be the Houston Roughnecks as they will have wither Connor Cook or Phillip Walker at QB, Andre Williams at RB and Sammie Coates at WR. The team does not have a TE on the roster, but head coach June Jones has plenty to work with. Bet the over in all of their games, but I wouldn’t bet on them to win the championship.
DC may be the long shot team to bet on as they are led by Pep Hamilton at head coach, Cardale Jones at QB, Donnel Pumphrey at RB and Eli Rogers at WR. Another team that is going to be fun on offense and may be worth throwing some futures money on as QB Cardale Jones has led a team to a championship before.
St. Louis and Seattle are the two biggest longshots this season and that makes sense. Neither team looks like they will have the offensive fire power to stick with the other teams in this league, so I would not put anything on either of these teams.
As we get ready for the 2020 XFL season I would put my money on the Los Angeles Wildcats (+450) to lift the championship this season.
