Women’s Wimbledon Best Bets – July 8th
Wimbledon is in to the final 16 and that means it is time for manic Monday. After Monday both the men and women will know who the eight quarterfinalists are. The women’s matchups are #1 Ash Barty vs Alison Riske, #3 Karolina Pliskova vs Karolina Muchova, #6 Petra Kvitova vs #19 Jo Konta, #7 Simona Halep vs Coco Gauff, #8 Elina Svitolina vs #24 Petra Martic, #11 Serena Williams vs #30 Carla Suarez Navarro, #21 Elise Mertens vs Barbora Strycova and Dayana Yastremska vs Shuai Zhang.
Below are my two best bets for Manic Monday at the All-England Club.
Petra Kvitova (-189) vs Jo Konta (+150)
Petra Kvitova is back in the Wimbledon Round of 16 after a straight set win over Magda Linette on Saturday. Kvitova has yet to lose a set this week in her wins over Ons Jabeur, Kristina Mladenovic and now Magda Linette. The two-time Wimbledon champion, and three time finalist, will be playing in her sixth Round of 16 at Wimbledon and her first since 2014.
Jo Konta is through to the Wimbledon Round of 16 after a comeback win over #9 Sloane Stephens. Konta dropped the first set, but then did not drop her serve again in the 3-6 6-4 6-1 win over Stephens. Konta has also beaten Ana Bogdan and Katerina Siniakova this week. The 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist, Konta, will be making her second Round of 16 appearance at this tournament.
I like Petra Kvitova to get the win on Monday.
Petra Kvitova leads the H2H 3-1, but the series is tied 1-1 on grass. Kvitova got the better of Konta last season on the Birmingham grass, but Konta was able to knock off Kvitova during 2016 Eastbourne.
Dayana Yastremska (-189) vs Shuai Zhang (+150)
Dayana Yastremska is through to the Wimbledon Round of 16 after taking out Viktorija Golubic in straight sets on Friday. Yastremska has now beat Golubic and Camila Giorgi in straight sets and also knocked off #27 Sofia Kenin in three sets. Monday will be the 19-year-olds first Round of 16 appearance at a Grand Slam.
Shuai Zhang is through to the Round of 16 after knocking out #14 Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets on Friday. Zhang was able to say 11 of 14 break points, and broke Wozniacki six times, en route to the win. Zhang has yet to drop a set this week which includes wins over #23 Caroline Garcia and Yanina Wickmayer. Monday will be the first Wimbledon Round of 16 appearance for Zhang.
I like Dayana Yastremska to get the win on Monday.
Dayana Yastremska leads the H2H 1-0, but this will be the first meeting on grass. Yastremska got the better of Zhang on the Hong-Kong hardcourts in 2018.

After Saturday Wimbledon will be down to its final 16 men in the bracket. Saturday has eight more third round matches and there are some nice matchups set to take place. #11 Serena Williams vs #18 Julia Goerges, #9 Slone Stephens vs #19 Jo Konta and #15 Qiang Wang vs #21 Elise Mertens are the three ranked matchups on the day, but #1 Ash Barty, #4 Kiki Bertens, #6 Petra Kvitova, #13 Belinda Bencic and #30 Carla Suarez Navarro are also all in action.
Below are my two best bets for Saturday at the All-England Club.
Elise Mertens (-175) vs Qiang Wang (+137)
Elise Mertens is through to the third round of Wimbledon after a 7-5 6-0 win over Monica Niculescu in the second round on Thursday. Mertens entered three warmup tournaments and made a run to the quarterfinals in Mallorca, fell in the third round Eastbourne and suffered a first round defeat in Hertogenbosch. This will be Merten’s second third round appearance at Wimbledon.
Qiang Wang is through to her first Wimbledon third round after knocking out Tamara Zidansek in the second round. Wang, not known for her grass ability, played one warmup tournament and fell in the second of Birmingham to Venus Williams.
I like Elise Mertens to get her first win in the matchup.
Qiang Wang leads the H2H 3-0, but this will be the first meeting on grass. The two met earlier this season, on the Indian Wells hardcourt, when Wang came away with a tough three set victory.
Jo Konta (-200) vs Sloane Stephens (+162)
Jo Konta is through to the third round of Wimbledon after an easy 6-3 6-4 win over Katerina Siniakova in the second round. Konta started off her grass swing with a second round exit in Birmingham and then followed that up with a third round loss, to Ons Jabeur, in Eastbourne. This is Konta’s second appearance in the third round of Wimbledon having also made this stage during her run to the semifinals in 2017.
Sloane Stephens is through to the third round of Wimbledon after cruising to a 6-0 6-2 win over Yafan Wang in the second round. Stephens played just one warmup tournament and she fell in the second round, after receiving a first round bye, to Jelena Ostapenko, in Eastbourne. Saturday will be Stephen’s fourth third round appearance at Wimbledon.
I like Sloane Stephens to get the win and to advance to the Round of 16.
Jo Konta leads the H2H 3-0, but this will be the first meeting on grass. The two have played three times this season, twice on clay and once on the hardcourts, and Konta has come away with two straight set wins and one three set win.
